In other words if the plumes reported are real this will continue as an ongoing mess until the plumes are depleted

If they have isolated the plumes and there is any degree of cohesion between the particles comprising the plumes, could they not essentially stick a hose inside the plume and suck the oil/gas mixture out of the gulf?

It'll be a slow process before the plumes hit land. We are in this for the long haul.

I havent talked to single professor who says its better for the oil to be in the water column and not on the surface. I'd like to hear more thoughts regarding the matter.

Link? It is at its current depth because that is where it is stable. Will take a LOT of strong, constant current to push it up the contential shelf smearing all along the way. If it ever lets up, it will just slide back down. At least that is my current read on it.

It is a possible bomb. But emphasis on possible.

No. It is mixed with a lot of water.

Which is good/bad.

Higher surface area means more microbial activity. More microbial activity means more oxygen depletion....which is my main concern about this plume.

I suspect this thing will kill by wiping all of the oxygen in the water, killing any fish in the area in spite of them not being exposed to the oil.

First of all Link these. I have 14 years in the oilfield and don't need some artical written by some ap reporter to tell me whats happening. Second, It's already on the shelf!(chandeleur islands)(East Bay)

But if you need a link

Good for you. I am not in the industry myself, but I am not scrambling to grasp the basics either. But maybe you should be following the news a little more rather than assuming that you know it all if you think this:

is at all pertinent to this topic or anything I have said in here.

We are talking about a oil zone around 3-4000 feet underwater, stretching 10 miles from the leak, and is about 300 feet thick. Nothing else. Yes, I am aware some oil contamination has hit land in various parts of LA. But that isn't what this topic is about.

10 miles from the leak? Where did you hear that from? It was my understand a plume of oil was discovered that was 10 mile wide. The pelican was not allowed anywhere near the hot zone area. They left again last night at midnight for a regularly scheduled sampling trip. They should have some more info on wed when they return to port.

Its coming from the leak so its starting point is anchored there. (Something supported by the illustrations I have seen regarding the scope of the plume).

I think it is 1-3 miles wide, and 10 miles long.

And I think it is stretching WNW of the leak, but I cannot find confirmation
