Bought my kid a savage axis compact in .243 when he was 10. I did need a trigger job but he’s folded everything he’s ever hit with it including a red stag doe. I use the 100 gr federal power shock in it ($26 at Walmart). You can’t go wrong.

I’m open to letting him learn to shoot left handed too if that’s the most comfortable.
Not great with an AR but doable.
5.56 is plenty for SE whitetails, but that sorta depends on what sort of hunting you do. If you're the type who can't resist a shot at a walking buck 250 yards away, no, it's not enough. I don't care about trophies and I personally would never take that shot but some would. If you're sitting in a stand and they're eating corn 100 yards away, 5.56 is fine.
I know a family with a LOT of land and they use .223 almost exclusively. The shots are short and taken on food plots, and they typically take neck or high shoulder shots. They just drop if you hit them correctly, and probably would with a .22 magnum as well.

Tracking them is not fun when that .223 doesn’t leave a blood trail.

I got mine a Savage 7mm08 at 10 and absolutely love it!
Shoot 139 gr Hornady SST bullets and he’s killed quite a few with it. It’ll last for a while too

Yeah, this would be for <100 yd shots in food plots type stuff.
Thanks to yall who chimed in.
The gun is bare bones as hell, but had an adjustable stock that shrinks down to almost nothing.
Will have to look into those scopes because this thing doesn’t even have iron sights.

My son just bought my 9 year old grandson a .308 Henry crack barrel.
Neat compact rifle.
Also bought reduced recoil ammo to start him off.
He also bought the Henry hammer extension.
