that's what i was thinking, but how do i argue with KBB and he says that a dealer would give him 16k. I realize that trade in value may not be the "true value" though.

How long do you plan on keeping it? 80k miles is kinda high if you plan on keeping for a while. But that is my own opinion.

I'm at 145k on my '01 F150 and she's doing just fine.

I think he's have a hard time selling it at that price. You can probably get an lariat, basically the same truck, for that price with less miles/newer.

Easily, no one uses KBB...not even dealers.

BS. Dealers usually low ball to begin with...and a 2005 truck with 80,000 miles and a tweaked trans won't fetch that much. Especially when gas is 3.50+/gallon. No dealer wants to be stuck with a used, gas sucking truck on the lot right now...especially not at $16k in it.
ETA: Has it ever been wrecked? If you are seriously interested, get the vin and get a carfax report on it. That'll give you an even better idea of what it is worth.

I'd deduct the price for being king ranch personally. His seats probably look like dog shite right now.

that's why i said it may not be the true value. they just want to sell him the truck. they will just make up what ever they give him on the trade on the price of the new one.
eta: the seats look good. he took care of the interior.

Is he going to sell directly to you or are is he having dealership do a courtesy trade?
Posted on 8/16/11 at 2:08 pm to nhassl1
If he's selling directly to you, I'd offer him 15k tops assuming the trans is mechanically sound and the carfax report comes back good. Otherwise, 13k sounds reasonable to me...I guess I could be wrong...but I think that's a fair price. He can't be expecting anyone to come near 17k for that truck right now...economy is too bad and gas is too expensive.

An '05 for 17k? Yeah, no. Not worth anywhere close to that.
I sold my '04 Yukon XL last Nov. for $10k. It had less than 100k miles on it and was in impeccable shape. The dealership wanted to give me $8k. It was a 2wd however but that was only worth a couple of thousand extra.
That truck might be worth $10-12k at the most, probably less with a replaced tranny

direct sale to me, and that means i could save a few $ on taxes.

i think consensus has been reached. plus i can get a new truck for about 21-24K but it may not have the 4x4 and other options that i may want.

I had the same truck but it was 07 model..
4 door 4x4, 115k miles.. gave me 12k on a trade.. they sold it for 15,500.
asked the guy who bought it, that's what he told me he gave for it.

I"m driving that exact truck in the copper color. It has a few more bells and whistles on the interior than the Lariat, and from waht I recall wasn't priced much more but I got mine from a dealership that was relocating and making crazy deals. I pull a 9,000 lb boat with it and it gets the job done. All that said, 17K is too much for a 6 year old truck. I'd go between $12 - $14K.

Ask him if he has changed the spark plugs... those models if changed at 100k miles as they say to have had a tendency to break off in the motor. The you have to have em drilled out. Pricey. Might want to have him get a tune up before you buy it so they break off on him if they do

I got a 06 model. Only problem I had was the 4 wheel drive would only lock in when it felt like it. Now for some odd reason is locks in every time. check out the f150 forum website.
