I remember 20 years ago one of my best squirrel dogs was killed by a rattlesnake. Bit right in the chest.

Similar story with a better ending.

Guy I lease from in Dulac told me I could hunt his blind around Thanksgiving but told me I had to look for his dog. He's a 4yr old Weimaraner that he lost sometime during the hunt and left that day without ever finding it. I thought it was odd that he didn't give everything he had to search for that dog that day, but o well. Several days later on I think day 6 of the "search", a Facebook post was made that was found alive near a marina in Dularge. I pulled up google maps and took some measurements, and he was found nearly 7 miles from where he went missing. The following day it got down in the low 30s and I'm afraid that he wouldn't have made It through the night.

Man, what a heartbreaking story.

But, when you think about the good life you gave that dog, that dog must have lived more in that short time than any dog that lives 25 years cooped up in some yard in the city. I always think that's the best way to honor a dog that's gone - to adopt a new pup and give it a shot at an outdoor life, and save it from being stuck in some tiny yard for its whole life, with the only time it gets to go out are on visits to the vet.

Damn that doesn't seem like 3 years ago. Losing a dog, whether by death or any other way, is one of the worst feelings in the world. They really are family and I care more about my 2 labs than I do about the majority of people.

I have never hidden the fact I like most bird dawgs more than 99% of people I have met.

Sorry if I missed it, but do you think the dog drowned, was just lost, got hypothermia or something like the other dog, or what do you think happened? Tough loss for sure.

I'm assuming you sent the dog out the back and it just disappeared while you weren't paying attention (not blaming you), or did it just keep going out of sight?

no clue...he was out of sight 15 seconds after we sent him due to marsh grass - was not uncommon for him to go on "extended" chases of cripples - he had a couple of times where he was gone for an hour and then appeared at the blind or even back at camp later...

It was warm enough where a stumbled upon gator could have gotten him.

he could have gotten tangled in something and drowned or made it to highway and got hit by a car.

He was a very very vocal dog - if anything happened close we would have heard something.

I left a couple of items at the blind - I can assure you he never returned to the spot we hunted.

I doubt somebody scooped him up, because he was houdini like most GSPs he would have gotten out and chip reader would have pinged.

It got into the low 20s the night after - but he had a vest and he could easily have stayed dry.

like I said this one will haunt me.

Honestly after we looked for several hours we really were surprised he wasn't at the boat launch when we got back.

It was 2 or 3 days later, wasn't it, when you got word from the lady at Lombards that she saw him chasing birds about 500 yards into the marsh? KingRanch's dad and I went out there as soon as we saw you post on here about it and spent a good hour to hour and a half calling for him, but to no avail. I even brought my lunch with me to try to lure him across the Bayou if we had seen him.

I pass near there and around there almost every day for work and think about it all the time . Seems like yesterday. Can't believe it's been 3 years.

We drove down from Huntsville to go meet my MIL at the hospital and I drove real slow through that area when I was on the interstate...just in case. I remember this too. Ole Grizz...I sure hope he's warm somewhere...or romping in the land over the rainbow bridge!
