quote:Albino genes on these are WEAK. Starlight, Green dragon, Super red all seem to do better but the "albino" and "lemon" seem to be more finicky to me. Starlight are the coolest by far and again I'd get more than 1-2.
Currently in my 29G:
2 peacock gudgeon Awesome fish
4 neon tertra consider increasing
3 panda corys
3 Endlers Awesome fish but will get lost with everything you are doing, consider a small tank with more endlers
50ish neocardina shrimp some of these guys will get picked of, but the population should thrive
I will be moving all the fish over to the new tank because I don't want to get rid of them and I also don't want multiple tanks. The shrimp might get eaten in the tank but I am fine with that.
New Fish:
3 Blue Rams (1M, 2F) Id pick one, blue rams or Bolivians and you can do more than a trio
3 Bolivian Rams (1M, 2F)
1-2 Mexican (or Cajun) dwarf crawfish If you are talking about the dwarf mexicans you will be fine, no idea what you mean by cajun... the dwarf mexicans multiply like crazy so get some nice colored orange ones.
20 Rummynose tetra Great fish, buy 40 and Qt them in your old tank. I'll put QT treatment in another post later
2 Pearl Gouramis These do best in groups, solitary will get aggressive or so passive they starve Think 4+
3 Panda Garas These are social and need large groups 5+
10 Pygmy Corys Get Habrosus cory's and you can thank me later, don't be shy to go 15-20 on these
1-2 Albino Bristlenose Plecos
First equipment I would upgrade would be your heaters. Cheap heaters will cook your investment. 2 high quality titanium heaters or even something like a glass ebo jager or a polymer aqueon pro would be better. Use two smaller heaters and use an external temp controller like a inkbird to control them.
Sun Sun filters will work but they will leak. Just keep them in a Rubbermaid container if you don't want to upgrade. If you do upgrade petsmart has the FX4/FX6 filters on sale ALL the time for stupid cheap for what you get.
I like Finnex lights, the dumb ones that are actually more expensive, the planted + but if you want control the 24/7 are also good low tech lights.

Only suggested more panda corys since you have some already. Pygmy could be cool but I'd probably go with more for a 75.
Good idea on adding the tetras as groups until you have enough.
Great reason for the crawfish.
Any of the dwarf South American cichlids will look great on black sand.
I got my driftwood online from Drs Foster & Smith before petco bought & closed them. Incredible price for big pieces. Those and the soil definitely give my water a little color.

I used to have 10 and they slowly died off over the last 2 years. I don't actually want any neons, so I am just letting these 4 live out their lives.

Similar to the neons, these are only going in because I have them in my 29. I will probably get a few more for my son, he likes them.

I have a pair of blue rams that I picked up last week in my 29 that are looking great so far. I will either go with more blue rams or black rams (basically the same thing).

Could I do one or two Eletric Blue Acaras instead?

Good to know.
As for the equipment, my plan was to buy cheap everything at the beginning since I needed to buy a ton of stuff and then I will upgrade everything one at a time.
I was looking at the FX4 but I couldn't justify paying an extra $100+ when I also needed heater, sand, plants, wood, fish, etc.

Still cant see the pics but I love a nice planted tank. I worked in pet shops through high school and collage and have kept more wildlife than I can remember. I reduced everything down to a 375gal (96x30x30) hap/peacock african tank and a 8k gallon pond. While the africans are great looking they always seem to kill each other one by one. I might move to a geo tetra rainbow kind of setup.
Ill see if I can dig up my only "real" plant tank. It was a little 20gallon bowfront that I injected CO2 and had high output lights...it was as much work as my reef tanks and took a dump fast
It was really cool to see the plants off gas o2 during the day tho.
Are you in Lafayette by chance? I probably have some stuff you can have. No idea what I still have and what's still good. I tried to go through a bunch but still have things laying around.

You don't pay full price for an FX4, if you watch the aquarium groups online you can frequently stack coupons and get it for near $100. The Sun Sun will work but it doesn't have near the tech in it as an FX4 or FX6. They will also leak, so that is why I said keep them in a plastic container.
I just looked up black rams, if you mix your blue and black rams and one of the black rams is your dominant male then the colors on your blues is going to suck. It looks like someone just line bred the blue out of German Rams. I really like the natural German Rams over all the line bred.
Blue Acara dig up plants, if you are OK with they will probably be OK. Those will pick off all your shrimp, the Rams would dent the population but probably would not go after your full grown adults and some babies would make it through. I don't recommend Electric Blue Acara, their genes are poor and few survive to adult hood. Pearl Gouramis are fine, they just like company. If I was doing any Guarami it would be samurai's
If you can find starlight bristlenose they are a striking pleco and they are not line bred so their genes are really strong. L183 is their number. Segrest farms has a breeder local to them so if your local store orders from their then they can get them for you, if not get some off aquabid or something, just make sure you vet your seller.

Agreed I would think that guy would uproot your stuff.
Some others not on your list I really like are Rasbora Het, white cloud mountain minnows, dwarf neon gourami's. I'll have to think and try to remember its been a min lol.

I am unfortunately in Metairie. Let me know what you have and if I really like any of it, I may make the drive.

A pond is my future goal. I've done very little research so these species may not ne compatible but I'd like a pond filled with some combination peacock bass, large mouth bass, big red tail catfish, and maybe a few arowana.

I am from nola and go back sometimes. Ill do a little digging and see whats back there.
That would be cool pond. The place I worked at in high school on the west bank (Marcs exotic aquatics if anyone remembers) had a saltwater pond with some sharks and eels right by the front door. Was loads of fun there.

The main thing I can't get over for saltwater is the cost. If I cause an ammonia spike and kill my entire tank, it'd cost me as much as if one or two saltwater fish died from my mistakes.
I have accidentally killed more than 2 fish and I'd definitely accidentally kill saltwater fish.

definitely Oscars. Also maybe some big south american cichlids. I'm not sure if they would be compatible though.

Things are going WAY wrong if you are killing fish from ammonia exposure!
Biggest thing with Saltwater is disease and people just refuse to quarantine their fish. It is SO easy to set up a QT tank and treat your fish first, way cheaper than wiping a tank with oodinium or similar.

Haha I haven’t killed a fish from ammonia in a LONG time, just couldn’t think of a reason a fish might die due to my ignorance.
Its kind of a funny story because my success led to my downfall. I got 2 bolivian rams that turned out to have Ick. The female died but the male pulled through.
The only issue was that I couldn't get the male to eat anything. After about a week and a half I found a local store selling live black worms so I figured I'd give it a try. He LOVED them. This being the first time I was able to get a stubborn fish to eat, I got excited and started feeding him the black worms morning and night (I usually only do one night feeding per day).
I also decided to do some tank maintenance and I switched out the sponge in my hang on the back filter. Need less to say, this caused my beneficial bacteria colony to take a huge hit and combined with the extra ammonia load from double feedings. the ammonia spiked and killed the Bolivian ram and a couple neon tetras.
I almost swore off Rams that day cuz I wasn't skilled enough to care for them.

Anyone have any idea why my pics won't stay up? I am pulling them from my Google Photos page, do they change the link to the pics every so often or something?
Is there a better (free) website I can use?

Gentleman, the wife took the kids on a last minute trip with her parents so I got a chance to build the tank.
The build took about 5 hours and it honestly turned out better than I ever imagined.
I uploaded this picture to a different site so hopefully the link works for you guys.

One week update:
I now have all the fish and invertebrates that I own in the 75.
2 Blue Rams
3 Endlers
4 Neon Tetras
3 Panda Cories
2 Peacock Gudgeon
25 neocardina Shrimp
1 Amano Shrimp
1 CPO Dwarf Crawfish
All the fish transferred over without any issue. I did lose about 5 neocardina shrimp during the first few days but the majority of them are doing great.
I wanted to keep the rams in my 29G for as long as possible but due to the removal of the plants and about half the gravel for the new tank, the 29G began to crash around day 4. Even though the 75 wasn't quite done cycling, the 29 wasn't in any better shape so I decided to move them over. They had a really rough first 2 days in the 75 as they were both breathing heavy and really dark in color due to the stress but on their 3rd day in the 75, they turned the corner and began to act like typical rams.
The cycle still isn't complete. I have no ammonia but there is a trace amount of nitrite. Nitrate levels look good as they stem plants have begun to grow and clean the water.
A new product that I tried during this cycle is Kordon's NovAqua and AmQuel and I believe that these two products will replace my previous water conditioner of choice. The NovAqua is a traditional water conditioner that also help ease fish stress by enhancing their slime coat. AmQuel removes ammonia without interfering with the nitrogen cycle and also removes metals such as copper from the water. I obviously can't rule out it being a timing thing but I saw the turnaround for my rams occur within 6 hours of using these products.
From here, my immediate plan is to wait for the tank to be fully cycled and then try to get the rummynose tetra, either panda or pygmy cories (not sure will get or if I will get both) and 2-4 more Rams. At this point, the Pearl Gourami are probably not on the stock list.
