I have federal hydra shoks in most of mine.
I see several have Hornady. I don't have very many guns that shoot them well. They tend to be the least accurate rounds and I wonder what it is about them that make it so.
In my .308 they pattern about 5 inches where Federal and Winchester are around an inch all at 100yds.

Haha. So Carson got the VP9? I feel so elite!
And in regards to Hornady accuracy, handgun accuracy is an entirely different story than rifle accuracy. Plus I think handgun accuracy is overrated.
Instead of asking "How accurate is this gun?" It's better to ask "How easy is it to be accurate with this gun?" The difference in a 2.5" group or a 2" group at 25 yards with a handgun is very insignificant at self defense distances.

Yeah, I agree completely. I was also thinking about the article in this months American Rifleman talking about 10mm. In in they tested 4 guns. In every single one Hornady had the worst groupings.
It was more of a curiosity statement than anything.

HST is Federal's newest technology -- it's probably the most effective 9mm self-defense round you can buy. Numerous LE agencies issue HST in various calibers. And it's not at all expensive --> box of 50 rounds = $25. LINK
I carry the 147 grain 9mm HST. I have a few bullets that were recovered after being fired at a very reputable testing facility. All expanded to .83" diameter. (.83 caliber from a 9mm bullet was unheard of 5 years ago - and is still better than any other cartridges I know of).
I'm not advocating that people throw away old ammo every time something slightly better comes along.
BUT I did get rid of my Hydra-Shok and Golden Saber ammo in 9mm, .40 and .45 (sold it cheap) to make room for the HST. I'll take any legitimate advantage I can find, and when I find a bullet that will expand to 50% greater diameter than another brand, I consider that to be significant, and worth making a change.
Just my $.02 worth.

your opinion, or have you been shot with both calibers?

I put 9 fmj .40 into an armadillo at less than 10ft. All entered and exited.
Threw him on the back of the golf cart to go throw him in the woods, the sonofabitch jumped off on the way and ran off to die.
Shot placement trumps all.
Having said that, I am a firm believer in a round that breaks apart inside the body and sheds its energy internally. Most prefer a round that holds together.
In testing on nuisance animals invading the flowerbeds and gardens, I can say with confidence I would take a single shot to the chest with a simple hollowpoint vs any rounds that penetrates and frags.
The tissue damage, even on hogs, is extraordinary.
I view massive internal trauma as the ultimate goal of a self defense round. If the bullet punches through, a lot of energy was wasted. Massive internal bleeding is the same as massive external bleeding. Plus the SOB is more likely to die in surgery.
Pray you never need it, but a dead perp is a good perp.

You'll be hard-pressed to find anyone more knowledgeable than he when it comes to terminal ballistics of firearms.

Same here. They function in my daily carry guns and get good reviews. Price isn't too bad either.
