Ridgeback. Loyal to a fault and extremely protective of "their people".

My GSD is awesome. Great with everyone but protective. She is a big baby.

First time dog owner.
Looking for:
1) Medium to large sized
2) Intelligent
3) Not necessarily vicious but would make strangers think twice about breaking in
4) Good with kids

Doberman

My 3 year old treats my dobbies like jungle gyms. However, they will tear a stranger apart. They are really cool dogs.

My German shepherd fits all of you categories perfectly. She is very protective of us and when someone rushes into the house without knocking, but I don't believe she could hurt a soul. The only downfall is shedding as she is a full time indoor dog. I wouldn't trade her for the world, but I'm about to buy a roomba.

I got one of my dogs from a rice farmer. his lab had gotten knocked up by an akita and he was selling the pups on craigslist for 25 bucks. ended up being a really good yard dog.

I would bet they both saw a few more than 2 to form that opinion.

This I've got 7 year old GSD. knocks on the door, people in front yard, she will bark like crazy.

Also, I got a roomba for Christmas, Game Changer...

She does shed like crazy though.

Chows were the original trashy dogs before pits started killing people.

Girlfriend in high school had 1 and based off that 1 dog I agree with them. It's not much to go off of but I know I'll never get one.

OP....my suggestion is a blue heeler.

So does every other dog. The average lifespan of large breeds is 8-10 years.

Mines awesome and he has a really intimidating bark even though he wouldn't hurt a fly. He's a huge softy

I've known 3 people that had these.. beautiful magnificent animals....

My dad's best friend and one of my best friends were/is vets. The one dog that neither of them trust is a chow. They have both said that a chow will turn on someone faster than anything. Just food for thought.

My ear was food for thought for a friend’s chow once when I was a kid.

Any chance you remember which one you got? I've been trying to lurk GSD message boards to see if I need a specific one. She has med-long hair. I just don't want to drop a few hundos on a roomba and her hair annihilate it.

Get a Pudelpointer. No shedding, smart and versatile. Driven, great personality, and they can turn it off at home. I use mine to track blood, hunt quail, retrieve ducks and he's a great family dog. Give this breed a look.
