Another West Texas trip - 84 rattlesnakes

Just wrapped up a week in West Texas, though this time I did it solo. Caught 103 snakes, 12 species/subspecies, including 84 rattlesnakes (1 Prairie, 6 Ornate black-tailed, 77 Western diamondbacks). On my best day I averaged a rattlesnake every 7 minutes for nearly 4 hours (mostly babies).
The first of the trip was another monster - and I caught it within a mile of the last big one. This one was slightly shorter but felt heavier than the other one - heavy enough that it was bending my snake hook shaft (like Peyronie’s disease). And it was bending the shaft even though I was supporting it with a second hook as well. This one was way too pissy to free-handle.
What a welcome sight this was!
I did get to handle this little one though…
And dozens of these little guys…
I’ll do a full thread with all the species after I get back to Louisiana.
ETA: The big one was caught south of San Antonio after my first day of driving, before I made it out West.

I have always been amazed at the variety, coloring and patterns of reptiles.

We used to see some hammers at my company's lease 2 hours south of San Antonio.
Then out of no where we stopped finding them about 5 years ago.
Turns out they're still there, they just don't rattle any more because of the hogs. Talk about a shite your pants moment when you see one 5' away coiled up, silent as a mouse.

This is simply not true

Crazy that I found 77 out West and none were even remotely close to that size, but the 2 monsters near San Antonio were within a mile of each other. And some out West had just as many rattles so were of similar age, just didn’t have the size.
