Mine stays on. It comes in very handy when someone rear ends you. Had a girl bump me in a parking lot. She ended up with a hole in the hood of her car. All I had was her paint on my hitch.

Which is a good idea, because if you ever get rear ended with the hitch in place, it actually causes more damage to your frame...

It's painful even thinking about it. I have run into a hitch many times and it hurts like hell.

Try this one. My dad was hooking up our 24' boat to take offshore. As he lifted the hitch, somehow my finger got caught between the hitch and the ball. I still went fishing the next day. My nail was solid black. The nail bed is still jacked up as I type this.

Buddy of mine has a place in Fort Beauregard, they were taking a trailer off a hitch, as they were doing it, he didn't have the swivel jack locked, when the truck pulled forward, the tongue came down on top of the guys foot basically crushing it..

I'm good for one of those moments at LEAST once a year. Usually more than that.
It hurts and it makes you feel like a moron.

I take mine off after a trip so we are not used to it being on. My wife was helping me unload and hit her shin hard enough to get stitches. She must be a good one because we are still married.
