Fairly common. We used to catch them in the nasty water of Dawson's Creek in BR.

Still plenty in the Metairie canals. I see some frequently sunning at the U-turn culvert bank by my house.

Saw one a while back near a pond at LSU golf course. Figured I would catch him. That was the fastest I ever seen a turtle run before he hit the pond.

Are the red ear turtles good to eat?

Caught them as a kid in the 40 arpent in Chalmette. We’d put a crab trap in shallow water so it wouldn’t be fully submerged (so they wouldn’t drown). If we used melts for bait, we caught sliders. But if we used chicken necks for bait, we’d get nothing but softshells, sometimes up to a half dozen in one trap.

Yes but you'll need to catch a bunch of them. Even the big ones don't have a whole lot of meat. Just make sure to remove all fat.

Common along Thompson Creek between West and East Feliciana Parishes growing up. You could walk along the water line and find bubbles popping up from the sand and dig them up.

Bayou Pierre Part is full of soft shell turtles Some as big as garbage can lids
