Ruger American gen 2
Thread from me buying one for my 8 year old. You will see a ton of suggestions there

3 shot grouping is mine at 100 yards. Bottom right is my sons shot with it.
This is him shooting it. For how compact it is it doesn’t have much recoil

It’s fantastic. I shoot the Barnes tax tx bullets.
It’s a nasty combo on deer and hogs

Bought my oldest a Ruger M77 compact over 25 years ago. .260 (predecessor to the 6.5 CM). Short stock but reasonably heavy so recoil is minimal. Super light rifles are easier to carry but kick harder in same caliber. This one is about the length of a .30-30. Gets in and out of a truck or shooting house easily. Carries easily and easy to climb with. He still has it and lots of his friends and other kids have killed their first deer with it. I spent several $$ getting a very good trigger job and having the action bedded and the barrel floated.
It has a 16” barrel so it’s not a bean field 3-400 yard rifle but for 99.9% of what a young person would do it’s perfect. It’s a fine caliber for deer, coyote, hogs etc.
Biggest thing I like is it wasn’t a gun to outgrow. We still use it every season. If I’m walking a long way to get in a box or up a ladder I’ll take it. Great gun

Axis 7mm 08 for mine. Little larger boolit. Good rifle. When picking a scope pay attention to eye relief

Best compact rifle for 8yr old
Build a nice AR in a small caliber with an adjustable stock like a magpul CTR.

Not a caliber discussion
Too bad. For deer and hogs go 6.5 Grendel. For smaller varmints like coyotes and prairie dogs just do a 223 Wylde chamber so you can shoot 223 REM and 5.56.

Depending on the kids size most of the regular rifles that have the spacers in the stock now get with in a half inch of compact LOP with all the spacers out.
Didn't go compact when i bought and it hasn't been an issue with them always shooting from some sort of rest.
