When you say "West Cove marsh," do you mean back in those cuts right by the launch in the main canal before you reach the open water?

Yes, however boats are not allowed and the refuge closes October 15th.

I had a friend get run out of there a few weeks ago by someone telling him it's private property.

Just to be specific, we are talking about the West Cove Boat Ramp off Hwy 27?

Yes, I launched at the West Cove ramp and fished the marsh just south of the launch. The weather was kinda iffy Saturday morning so I decided to just stick to the marsh. Most days Id have fished my way to Old Camp and back.

It is. You can fish the first 150 yards of the canal then it technically turns private. I believe LDWF has a map showing the public/private lines.

Yep, I found the map a couple days after. It's definitely private.
I often wonder how many people running people off of private waters are actually doing it because they know/have permission from ownership to do so, or they know it's private and they have no association so they just run people off so they can fish an area to themselves. In the instance of Old Camp Canal the owner has been deceased for several years. Read recently that when a "Private Property" sign was put up on the old dock that relatives of ownership were contacted and none of them knew who'd even put it up. Who the hell knows.
On an unrelated note in my last handfuls of kayak trips into the WC marsh I'm running across more and more boats way back in the refuge in the "no outboard" zones.

Damn I miss living on Moss Lake. Just a small boat ride down to Turner's Bay and a bit further to Hog Island Gully and West Cove.
