You raise a good point. Every fort and surrounding territory should have some form of justice system to properly adjudicate any issues, should they arise. We had a magistrate that would make rotations after he finished his chores and his mom said it was ok.
We observed a more distributive system of justice in my forts, meaning the fort as an institution ensured that benefits and burdens are distributed among society's members in ways that are fair and just. While we may have been men of the woods, we weren't savages.

I grew up in rural LA on 30 acres that was bordered on 3 sides by 50,000 acres of Kisatchie National Forest.
I had forts everywhere. We would have some intense BB gun battles in the woods.

Growing up, my house was technically in Fountainbleau State Park. A small dozen home neighborhood, and my house was on the edge of the woods. My dad and I built many tree houses and forts. My last one was 3 stories with an "elevator", a couple boards below a block and tackle, that I raised and lowered myself with. In my head I remember it as the Taj Mahal of forts but if I saw it today, I'd probably laugh. I had Nintendo growing up, but all my life, to this day, I love being outside. Walks through the woods with the whole family were weekly occurrences from fall to spring. My dad taught me about birds and trees. It was an amazing way to grow up. I hope I can do the same for my son. We currently live in a neighborhood with no trees and I hate it. Making plans to move further out, get some land I can plant some fruit trees and gardens, on the edge of some woods where I can show him the art of fort building and then let his imagination take him away and make memories like I have.

i wrecked shop on the tallow tree behind my pow pows house. had a 3 story setup i built myself. pow pow's tires eat a lot of nails in them days.
i wouldn't build forts in the woods/cow pastures, but i played out in all of it. one of my favorite pastimes was chasing dillers with a bat.

I split one in two with a hoe before. Cracked the skull of a possum with a driver before

Me and my friends in the neighborhood had a 2 story "fort" that we built.
We used door trees in a "square and build a floor walls and roof. Then we closed in the area underneath with some old tin. We had a BBQ pit in the lower area and a couple of old bench seats from a truck in the upstairs part.
The only think we lacked was electricity and A/C.
It was awesome!

my trusty hatchet
I found a hatchet in the woods when i was little, completely rusted over with the grip long rotted away. Brought it home and grinded most of the rough surface rust off and gave it a good edge. Wrapped some leather around the handle and I thought I was the biggest badass. Never left the house without that thing, made many a fort with it.

We built a fort on an "island" in the creek near our house.
That's right boys, my fort had a fricking moat.

Look, i'm not proud of everything that happened in that fort. We did what we had to do to survive. Neither the Russians, nor the neighbors ever took that fort. That's good enough for me.
Sophistication? Enjoy your video games, nerd.

My parents got a load of dirt one time and I think that was my favorite toy ever.

Built forts all the time growing up. Used to go to my friends houses where we would spend all morning and afternoon building our fort, and setting booby traps. Once we were ready, we would lure the older brothers into the woulds and spring our traps on them.........but we eventually always got caught and got our asses beat. Ahhhh good times!!!!

on the land where I'll build my house we have two trees where the pond will be. My wife wanted to cut them down and I said nope, will be a perfect tree house set of trees. We'll have an island now.

booby traps
When i stayed at my cousins house as a kid we would rig his sisters door with booby traps. They scared the shite out of her when she opened that door. That happened hundreds of times.
We used those "firecrackers" that you pulled the strings and it would just go "bang".
One time we fashioned a trip wire and taped together a bunch of D cell batteries that would crash on her head when she opened the door and tripped the wire.............his mom opened the door the next morning and got smashed by the batteries.

Growing up in Lafourche Parish was awesome. Bayou on one side, cane fields in front, woods in the back. Me and my buddies were always building some kind of fort in the woods. I miss those days.

I built some forts, but the best one I ever made with my neighbors was one in a cane field. We cut out a small area that we knew how to get to, and brought a crappy table, some chairs, and even an old arse dresser.
Probably the funnest, short-lived shite we played in.

Christmas tree forts were the best.

Absolutely. Lived out in the country in grade school. Used to go off for hours with a hatchet, knife and a shovel just to go "build" structures in the woods. Only stipulation my mom gave was - be back before dark. Damn I miss those days.
