Wildlife usually investigates recreational fishing boat accidents. Young and Martin should be on it.

I know very little about offshore fishing, but I do know a little bit about nautical charts. You can't have unmarked items anywhere near a ship channel. items like that are either marked specifically on a chart or are in an "obstruction" area.

There are so many unmarked well heads in south LA it is ridiculous. It is amazing more people don't get killed in boating accidents.

When i worked at DNR, all structures after 1980 have to be removed upon abandonment. Before that time there is nothing you can do - grandfathered in. this was probably some long-gone company's well that closed shop way back. And it'll sit there until xxxxx. If it is a current company, they would have removed it.

if you lose gear, nets, etc. DNR has a Fishermen's Gear fund that will help pay. The front desk number is 225 342 7591. MAKE sure and get a GPS coordinate so they can mark the spot, and to verify.

Doesn't the state take over ownership of the well?

If anyone knows exactly which well it is, we can see the status on sonris.

I saw on The hull truth that it was on the northwest side. It's been a while since I ran SW Pass as we have been going out of S Pass or Tiger mostly....but I try like hell to never go in the dark down there. I remember that there are two unlit rigs almost directly on the course from the Midnight Lump to Tiger pass....a few years ago we blew a powerhead and were coming in at night and didn't have them marked but watched like crazy on the radar as we approach.. there was NO moon and you couldn't see those things for anything. You gotta be extra careful in poor visibility (fog, rain, dark) down in Venice.

i believe the office of conservation goes around cleaning up these wells, probably a slow process since there is so many.
