The OP is in a meeting for the next hour or so.

Just call the dude, tell him you want your money back. If he hesitates, tell him you saw him out there, so you know his story was BS. If that still doesn't get the money back, out him on the internets.
Sounds like you haven't even asked him for th money back yet. Seems like the first thing to do.

I agree with this.

just scrolled thru 7 pages of stuff. Looks like the guide did the right thing, and offered the rescheduled trip, or the money back. Sounds like the original bump was a BBD, but that just teaches you not to use the guy again.

I don't recall that being the case here, but not going back 5 pages to confirm.

Anybody shite on the dudes boat yet?

It appears that it is common practice for "Big Name" guides to book you then pawn you off on someone else whithout telling you. It has happened to me several times to think otherwise. I was lucky one and got a good one. Ending up becoming his regular customer as a result. Made trip for several years. Sadly he passed away, so I booked a trip this year, same thing-pawned off. Will not call them again.

The "right thing" ended when he deposited the check for the trip he JUST cancelled for what appears a rather dubious reason.

I haven't read through all the pages here but I'd try and find out if he didn't have someone run his boat for him that day. It happens all the time between guides. IT's not uncommon for guides to bad mouth each other too so be leery of a guide or two outing him in this circumstance.
The timing of the check clearing wouldn't bother me so much in that it generally takes a few days to clear if it was depostied and not cashed.
First things first, you should call and see how he handles it. The guide should have made an effort to get you set up with another guide in his place and explain why he needed to do it.
Once you give him an oppurtunity to explain what happened, see if he makes right and all. If he doesn't, its time to get your facts completely straight and out him publicly on the local outdoor sites. Just be factual, to the Tee, don't embellish at all, so your post will stay up and not get wiped as soon as you put it up... My $.02 anyway...

I know what happened and when the OP gets back to us I'm sure things will be set straight.
I know I said I wouldn't say anything else but I'm just urging everyone to wait till the conclusion of this ordeal happens before criticizing anymore than has already been done.

They dumped the ashes on the other side of the boat where the OP couldn't see them...

Ok but he cashed the deposit check after cancelling....something is fishy! No pun intended.

If he was out there dumping ashes that would be just like a seinfeld episode.

Indeed

If that's what happened then it was a real bad move on his part. However, its entirely possible that he deposited the check and didn't clear till that day. He may have been acting in good faith but like you said, it does seem, "fishy." LOL...
Still a few things that need to be clarified before he gets crucified. That's all I was saying...

As long as he refunds the deposit I don't think it's a huge deal but if he tries to hold onto it then I'd start looking at other options.

This. No matter what the reason its all about the deposit to me. That should have been taken care of on the phone already though.

He has tried numerous times already this morning to contact the OP. Let's wait and hear what he says.
