I know next to nothing about this iindustry. However I have had conversations with farmers in TX and in LA about the insurance game they play. That has been absent from this thread. Hedging a big crop vs a bad one with insurance. And if done correctly;y, can win both sides on occasion.
Any validity to this?

Makes you wonder why anyone farms…

I am not vilifing farmers in any way. Crop insurance subsidies do not even register on the radar for things people need to worry about when it comes to issues with the country. Would love to see ethanol go away but that would have to happen in conjunction with something else to minimize the impact to AG.

On the plus side for hunters filling all those drum feeders won’t hurt the pocket book so bad.

Farmers are the new nurse, they cry all the time but have nice homes and fancy cars.
With that being said I wouldn’t mind being a farmer. I’d drive the crud out of a tractor!!

I'm thankful for farmers and don't understand how they make a profit with the high price of everything these days. Sure there is some fraud and a lot of subsidies, but I couldn't sleep at night if I had the kind of debt most have to incur to stay in business.
As for corn, I never thought it would go down. And I still don't- much like cars, gasoline, power, etc.
WM is down to selling 30# bags for around 6$ around here.

I assume it's due to the nice wet year we've had leading to a better corn supply which drives down the price.

The projected cost of production and breakeven prices for corn and soybeans in 2025 are very similar to those experienced in 2024. The breakeven price for corn on average productivity soil is expected to drop from $5.33 to $5.27 per bushel.
Dec corn $3.78
Dec corn $3.78

I sure as hell will! With corn that cheap I’ll have 2 feeders on every plot! haha

Maybe deer corn will finally come down to a normal price again

Not mentioned specifically yet is cost of inputs on top of everything. Fertilizer continues to be expensive chemical, diesel and then you add labor, equipment and rent/land notes I can’t believe any of them make a living.
Try to imagine a world without farmers …

If farmers, water treatment / waste water treatment operators, electrical grid operators decided to not go into work, society would collapse almost immediately

Shoot me your email. I have 1700 acres i will sub lease to you. Will custom farm it or you can do it yourself. This isn't a joke either. If you want to farm here is your chance

Man I wish I could right now, have 1 maybe 2 more years where I’m at (currently work for family member about to retire)
2 things I’ve always wanted to do was drive an 18 wheeler from coast to coast once and to farm vast open land.

Corn briefly hit $8 in 2012. That’s the only time it was ever that high.
Corn hasn’t been above $6 since 2013.
You have no idea what you are talking about.
Have you seen what fertilizer, diesel, and equipment prices have done since then?
The last decade has been skinny for grain farmers.
