LDWF finally had to admit we had cougars when one ended up in a tree in downtown Bossier City by the casinos. lol

We've had them my whole life up here in the NW corner of the state. LDWF was full of shite. There was at LEAST one in Soda Lake in the 70's and 80's. As well as some in Bodcau.

We've got at least one around Benton.

And yeah, if you shoot one, you're screwed unless it's ingested some of your scalp lol.

I didn't know they finally admitted it. As recently as a few years ago, they denied it, even looking at pictures, from our camp...

LDWF will most definitely tell you that cougars do NOT exist in La. I know that cougars do exist, but, I would be willing to bet that there will NEVER be a cougar season.

actually LDWF did confirm presence of 2. in south west la one in allen parish and one near lake fause point

My uncle hunts in pleasant hill and has seen alot of signs of cougar activity, including a clawed up cedar tree. He says he walked up on one that was in a creek bed and thought it was a deer until he saw it in the scope. The cat turned and saw him and ran off.

My dad tells stories of being a kid in Castor and hearing the screams. He was young but remembers his grandpaw going and rounding up the cows.

4X4, he was probably referring to panthers. This was fairly common for us around hog killing time.. They sound just like a woman screaming in terror..Most of the old timers in my neck of the woods used to call them "painters", course most of them had lost their teeth, but, that's what it sounded like they were saying...

I have seen two. One outside Sikes in Winn Parish and the other on Davis Island.

We had two in our area we know for sure, one in north Bush and the other in Waldheim. Its been awhile though since we have seen any sign of the one around the house though.

Interesting, just did about 20 searches, and they can be confusing.. I've seen a few, what I would have called panthers in La., and 1, what I would have called a cougar in southern Ar. After reading, it looks like they are of the same species, but, with different looks. The panthers that I have seen were black, a bit smaller and larger head. The cat that I saw in Ar. just a few years ago was larger, but, it looked like a smaller head and dark tan in color.. Heck, I don't know, 2 entirely different looks and yet, both of the same specie.. BTW, I saw the word "painter" in one article. I think Ben Lilly used to call them lions..

Yeah, they call them "painter cats" down south. Slang I guess.

No such thing. While there is a well known melanistic phase of the Jaguar, there is none for the cougar/mountain lion/puma.

Yep.

Correct. Cougars/mountain lions do not possess the gene to have a black coat. Jaguars, which at one time had a range that extended into SWLA do. Anyone who sees a large black cat is seeing either a black lepoard or jaguar, or most probably a really large feral domesticate cat.
