re: Deer hunting public land etiquette

You have the right to walk through the woods whenever you want. If you walk up on someone, oh well. That’s part of it. I try to be courteous and do my scouting midday, but not everyone does that. This past season I made a morning hunt, right after daybreak, when the woods were still a little foggy and I was hoping to see a big buck slipping through the fog, I instead saw a crossbow hunter walking straight to me… it’s a little frustrating, but he’s allowed to hunt how he wants to hunt. I waved, he waved back and kept on about his business.
Honestly that’s one thing I like about public land. There was no drama. Do that on a club and you’d likely be kicked out. At the very least, there would be drama back at the camp. I can’t tell you the last time, if ever, that I’ve had a problem with another hunter on public land. I have however, made quite a few friends in the woods.

Ok cool. From what i have read on this thread, i sure am looking forward to this season hunting public. Will be a cool change of scenery.
I remember in my old lease some dude decided to sight in his new rifle at 1:30 PM during deer season. Myself and others were not happy about that.

i have seen multiple times, deer on a shooting range without a care in the world
obviously typical hunting ground is different.
when i was in a club, there was a map and you put down where you were going, general block/area, or we just told the other guys there. we stayed away from that area. we had plenty of land so it wasnt a bug deal.
is there any way that i can, or that others might do to let people know where they might be?

I used to hunt behind a shooting range back in the day. They’ve since closed the area, but it used to be a pretty decent little spot. I’ve also seen deer come out on that same range within 5-10 minutes of finishing up shooting my rifles. They know where they’re safe

Our land butts up to the sheriff’s parish shooting range. We have stands within 200 yards of the range and they shoot all morning on Saturdays usually. The deer come out and don’t even pick up their head from eating when the shooting starts.
It’s all what they’re used to I guess.

I’ve shot in an f-class match before and we were shooting over a group of 20ish turkeys that were at 250yds down range. They didn’t care at all.

I know of dudes who duck hunt and are so competitive about it that one time they didn’t get any ducks. So they ask this one guy who limited out if they could take a pic with his stringer. Talk about a fragile ego.

Revisiting this thread once again because the season will be here before we know it.
I work during the week. I am limited strictly to friday and weekends. For scouting mid day, during the season during the weekend, is that an indecent thing to do or no?

No. Hell, a lot of times I'll stay on the stand all day because I know folks will be leaving/going to their stand and might bump deer around. Its no different with scouters or squirrel hunters. Some folks might get aggravated but if that's the only time you can do it then go for it.

Go when you can...another thing I do, along with others that I know, is after my morning hunt, take off and ride the roads via ATV or truck and see where people are parked...eliminates areas where not to scout.

Yeah it ain't fun having just weekends to hunt. Everybody hunts in different ways and you're bound to get annoyed by somebody else as well as annoying somebody else. That's just part of hunting public land. Yeah, you'll come across a real bonehead who is being a dick every now and then but for the most part you'll run into friendly folks and most screw ups are due to either ignorance or pure coincidence.

Right. I am trying not to get discouraged about it as I know the best time to hunt public is right smack in the middle of the week when you have to read invoices or go to meetings. I just hope i am not wasting my time hunting public on weekends only.

I always scout between 11am - 2pm. The woods are 90% empty during that time. Just don't scout during peak hunting times (morning/evening).
Just scout midday and you'll be fine.

Thanks man. I appreciate the advice.
That makes me feel better especially when you remember the old saying "can't kill them at home"

Nah, you won't be wasting time. I'd rather be sitting and enjoying the woods instead of being at home watching TV or doing yardwork. It's never a waste.

Yea....you are absolutely right

You're good. Just take time to do real scouting and put the time in the tree, and you can be successful. I had 3 public land archery buck kills last season and they were taken on a Saturday (November 23), Friday (November 29), and a Monday (January 13). I do prefer hunting during the week since there are less people out and about in the woods, but I see plenty of deer no matter the day.
Interestingly enough, I didn't see another hunter on any of those days. I did have green jeans stop me on the way to get my cart on the Nov 23 kill and check out my paperwork. They were out there because someone was shooting ducks before legal shooting time, and it sounded like the shots came from a no duck hunting area.
