Good luck!! And yes, I know smokers have to be ready to quit before they do, but here lately I've had a lot of lung cancer around me and I've been pushing the line on some friendships asking them to stop.
Maybe they will???
Prayers to y'all..

Generally not surgical if has made its way higher up into main bronchus. Has he had lymph nodes staged yet? PET scan? Those will really tell the tale on outcome. Im assuming if the called it stage 2 then they have done this already and as stated that generally is a good outcome. Will be praying for u.

Hey,
Sorry to hear about your situation. My Dad is well over five years from winning the fight of his life against advanced stage non-small cell lung cancer. He was diagnosed in August 2006, with an inoperable tumor in his left lung, which had permeated the lung wall into lymph nodes. Not only did he survive, but he is still a guinea pig for the doctors at the Lineberger Cancer Center, UNC Chapel Hill Medical Center in North Carolina. He has been on a trial medication owned by Merck, called Stimuvast, that is actually designed to prevent the recurrence of cancer. I will be glad to put you in touch with my Dad, or get you information about UNC and Lineberger, it is literally among the top 3 lung cancer centers in the world.
You can contact me at the following email if you would like to discuss further. Either way, best of luck and prayers to you and your family, and know that it is a winnable fight!

First, prayers to you and your family.

Squamous cell can originate in or spread to the "bronchial tubes". The proximity in the bronchial tubes and the lymph node stage determine whether he is an operative candidate, a neoadjuvant chemo candidate (i.e. give chemo to shrink and then resect) or a chemo/xrt candidate.

As a general rule, stage II is treated surgically with a reasonable chance of cure. Most are now treated with adjuvant (after resection) chemo. Newer chemo is tailored to the patient based on certain tumor markers and is much less toxic. Unfortunately, some of these agents are not very active against squamous cell.

If you know the true stage (TMN), prognostic information is available all over the web. Remember when you read this data that this is statistical analyses and that there are people who are on the far good side and far bad side.

The upside, we are way better at this today than we were 10 years ago. Keep the faith and good luck.

Prayers sent. I know how hard this is for you and your family. I lost my father to small cell lung cancer 3 years ago.

Just remember to keep your chin up and know that the fight is not over till its over. Do your best to help keep your dads spirits up. It is amazing how much the body can fight such things as this.

Thanks for the info. I will send you an email. The cancer has moved to the bronchial tubes but it is not made it to the lymph nodes according to the pet scan.

I smoked for 53 years until I had a stroke. I have been quit for 3 1/2 years. I have copd and had x-rays made last week. They looked good. I can't believe how lucky i've been. I am now in the best shape i've been in 20 years. Quit while you can.

My Pops quit when I was 15. 29 years ago, just made 70.

The worry for parents is almost as intense as the worry for kids.
