Nothing grows faster and provides more shade in that time frame than a River Birch. I'm not sure there is another tree that is even a close second.

How do they hold up to wind?

That peeling bark reminds me of my parent's sycamore trees. You have to constantly pick up around them things...twigs, leaves, bark...

Schumard oaks grow fast and bush out good.
I cut water oaks every year that come back strong. Small leaves but fast growers.

They rain limbs at the slightest hint of a breeze. They have the life expectancy of a suicide bomber. When I bought my house 10 years ago I thought the 50+ river birches that lined my driveway were awesome. Now I despise them. I'm down to about 35 now. I lose 3-4 trees a year. The remaining ones bomb my yard with limbs if the UPS man drives to fast down the driveway. This was the other day after a normal rain storm. I hate them.

But to the point of the thread, they do grow fast and produce shade fast.

I'll add Water Oak and Bradford Pear to the trees from hell.

I am thankful for the one Tallow on my western fenceline. It has a nice crown, and since it's in a yard, no new ones can come up.

Weeping Willow grows fast and will absorb a lot of water if you have a low spot that holds water.

In my opinion you don't want to go for fast, but longest lasting. I have sycamores and they drop more stuff in the yard than anything else I've even owned. Go for live oaks.
