Shimano. Everything gets compared to them, there's a reason for that.

I'm a big fan of the new curados. I'll be adding another in a couple weeks. I've used Lews in the past but I've noticed they just don't hold up. Maybe a cheaper reel just doesn't get maintained as well, but it's been my experience either way.

When I was broke as hell I used H2O express mettle reels and they are very, very good for the money.

I keep waiting for mine to give me a reason to replace them, and they just will not.

One of mine died because even though it still worked great I decided it needed to be cleaned. Dropped half the parts in the yard. Lesson learned.

The other one grew legs while on the porch at tarpon rodeo. Apparently the mettle's quality is widely appreciated.

Have you tried any of the other models? These have been so good and come on sale so often, I haven't dared stray. Not that I need any more reels

I haven't but they all seem like the same reel with a few extra features here and there. See above post, don't fix it if it ain't broke.

I just take that quick release side off from time to time and spray with Reel Magic.

In all of my years fishing, I have never seen another reel that sniffs my Calcutta.

Diawa Tatulas have been some real workhorses for me lately.

Can't go wrong with a Curado or Chronarch.

brand of baitcasters

In terms of quality top to bottom, it's hard to beat Shimano, but I do not actually own any at this time. My favorite reels in my current selection are a couple of Quantum Team KVD baitcasters that I have. Really good bang for the buck. I imagine the Tour KVDs are spectacular but I have a hard time paying over $200 for a reel considering how rarely I seem to get on the water these days

I have a Lews BB1 that I really like as well, it's a bit older though. I used to buy almost exclusively Abu Garcia, but that was mostly due to price concerns, they used to have the best Cheap reels (under $50) when I fished more and made less money.

Well, it was the original reel by which all reels were compared. Also cost $150 buck 20 years ago, as I recall. Best feeling reel I've ever held in my hand, unfortunately, never owned one.

Loved my Shimanos. I usually carried 2 Calcuttas and a Curado.
My first entry level baitcaster was an Abu Garcia, and the Shimanos were a big step up but more expensive. I gave Abu a shot again and bought one of their models that was supposed to be comparable to a Calcutta, and it paled in comparison. Waste of money.
