quote:

Gist said they discovered dozens of hound dogs, all wearing expensive radio collars and white paint, and all treading water.

The dogs were at least a half mile offshore, and Gist said he could tell by the way their heads looked in the water that they couldn’t see the shore and seemed to be lost.

Chrestman pulled the boat up to each dog, and Gist and Carlisle loaded them one at a time into the boat.

Gist said they loaded 27 dogs into the boat for the first load and took them to shore. They then went back and rescued 11 more.

That's a lot of dogs.

If only they could've read posted signs they never would've gotten themselves into this predicament.

Google earth shows that the lake has huge fluctuations in water levels.

Right now there is a bass forum with some ol boy who has a 120k bass boat with live scope and spot lock complaining about how dog hunters are the lowest of trash and that treading hounds pushing spawning bass off their beds is ruining the fishery.

In 1936, the Yazoo Headwater Project created the Arkabutla, Sardis, Enid, and Grenada lakes in Mississippi. Engineers and technical experts determined that the headwaters of the Yazoo River played a substantial role in the The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.

The Arkansas and Mississippi rivers broke loose and flooded large areas of Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana, and losses at the Vicksburg District were estimated at $104 million. After this devastation, the Flood Control Act of 1928 developed a comprehensive flood control program that included the world’s longest levee system.

Those 4 MS lakes are pretty much drained at the end of fall and they fill up over the winter and spring reducing flooding in the Delta. So basically 4 giant retention ponds.

That lake is the top crappie/sacalait lake in the country.

Not the south the whole country

In from Grenada so I can speak to this a little.

Most of all the land surrounding the lake is Corp owned so there’s no marinas, restaurants, much of anything. There’s like 4-5 pretty nice houses in a small strip on one end of the lake.

It’s regulated heavily by the Corp, much more so than Enid & Sardis and this prevents pretty much anything from being built on it (marina).

It is up for debate as the #1 lake in the nation for Crappie fishing. ESPN has hosted the national championship here several times.

Lots of people here biatch about the flood level controls the Corp implements and think it puts pressure on the crappie population (they actually did just adjust limits) as well as it tearing up the banks of the Yalobusha River which people like the kayak down.
