I used to be all fixed. Killed a pile of deer and an elk with Magnus stingers but I was also shooting a lighter setup. Arrow was 400 gr with 115 up front. Changed my setup several years ago to 460 gr with 175 up front and started shooting Sevrs. Killed several deer including a buck that weighed 250 lbs and all blew through them.

This year I switched to the Evolution Hyde. It's more of a hybrid with a cut on contact point and blades that open to a 2" cut. I shot an elk 2 weeks ago with it, arrow dead centered a rib and buried to the fletch. He didn't go 75 yds. Shot a doe with one this past weekend and it blew through her and Ray Charles could have followed this blood trail

I still bare shaft tune and do all the things I did when I shot fixed to get broad heads and field points hitting together but I believe that if you're in the 450-500 gr range and are shooting a decent poundage like 65-70 lbs you can kill damn near anything in North America with a good mechanical head and on the chance that I hit one further back then I would like I want as big a hole as possible

so you likely sliced her down a side and maybe caught a lung. Not a broadhead issue. I have one lunged deer that do exactly what you had happen. Had the shot on video which showed me what went wrong on a shot that initially looked great to me

Could have. Arrow was stuck in her and fell out about 10 or 15 yards away. Only 4 or 5 inches of muscle blood on it.

It’s all about shot placement, with that being said, I’m shooting G5 Deadmeat V2’s this season. With one doe down so far, I can’t complain. I made a good shot, she bled like a fire hydrant and piled up 20 yards away.

I’ve shot fixed heads as well, mainly because we have quite a few hogs where I’m at. They have been great, but hunting next to 4yo cutover I wanted a better blood trail so I made the switch.

Id like to try the grim reaper white tail specials but would like to hear some thoughts before purchasing...

I’d echo what everyone else has said about shot placement. That said, I’ve shot whitetail specials for probably 15 years now and I don’t know that I’ll ever switch. Over that time period I’ve probably killed 50 deer with them. I’ve only lost one and it was a terrible shot on my part, and I pushed the deer.

If I do my part, the deer die quickly. If my shot is marginal, I still have a lot of confidence the broadhead will do its job. Never had a blade break but I only use broadheads once. I also don’t think I r ever had a failure to open.

All those deer were killed in Texas, Louisiana, and Alabama though. I may shoot a fixed blade if I were regularly shooting at larger bodied animals, or if I ever get the opportunity to bow hunt elk.

Hydes are fantastic heads. These two does were taken with 66lb and 530 ish TAW and a 68# and similar setup. Buried behind in both instances. First was at 43 yards and went maybe 60. Second was at 12 yards and went down in 40. The buck was at 17 yards and maybe went 75. Hit em in the heart with anything and they don’t go far.

Modified Cutthroat from a 55lb longbow and 600 TAW XX75 aluminum shaft.

I’m only assuming it hit the elbow, but sure sounded like it.
100% my shot placement was off a few inches, plus her taking that step to quarter away from me after I released and possibly crouching/tucking her elbow up. She was originally broadside with a slight quarter, but took one step I’m assuming as I shot to more of a quarter.
Agreed on it not necessarily bouncing back, but sure looked like it. Could have just been slung off when she blew out. Still boggled my mind watching it happen though, and hearing that thud when it hit.
Aside from that, I have been shooting rage from day one and barring a bad shot, I’ve had great results from them.
