His initials aren’t LW are they?

This quite prudent for me. I just shot one with my 22 w/ a shot shell that was hanging out by the door.
2 kids walked right over it and luckily my SIL noticed it and called me over to take it out.

Nope.
He’s a super nice guy. Loves animals of all types and works to educate people on them and works to reduce people’s fear of snakes. He just did a trip from Florida to New Mexico, hitting around 14 states over 2 weeks and catching everything imaginable. He gets to do what he loves and social media pays for much of it. I envy the guy for figuring out how to do what he loves AND get paid for it. And tips from him have put me on some of my biggest catches this year.

For sure.
I’ve found that the funnest things I’ve done in life have also been the most high risk.

Handling venomous snakes on video makes inexperienced folks (kids also) want to mimic that. It’s not cool at all I have seen my son watching videos like that and have to educate him that the people doing that are absolute retards and will get bitten eventually

It doesn’t MAKE anyone do anything.
I’m sure everyone knows the saying “if your friend jumps off a bridge, are you going to follow him?” I raised my kids to think for themselves and take responsibility for their own actions. And he’s very vocal about “don’t try this at home”.
Personally, I’ve always felt very much more at risk when I rode motocross and did sportbike track days than I do when handling venomous snakes.

I enjoy some risk in my life and never really considered myself to be a retard. It took at least a little bit of intelligence to earn that doctorate. Though my wife might disagree.

So, what you're bitching about here is that you had to educate your son? Good to hear!
He will get the education you give him, one wrought with fear and judgement and a broader education that hopefully teaches him a deeper understanding, beyond "Dont be a retard!". Maybe he won't kill every snake he ever sees like some of the other pussies around here.

It's my understanding that copperheads have the mildest venom.
In early 80s (I was 14ish), I was bitten by a moccasin, I was taken to the hospital but didn't get whatever anti-venom was in use at the time (IIRC I was allergic, I believe they tested it by giving a small dose in the tricep). At any rate my foot swole up bigger than a football, but very little pain and no decaying of tissue. I was back to normal in a couple of weeks.
My dad, a life long farmer, said when he as growing up folks working the fields got bit fairly often, but no treatment (other than home remedies) was ever received and folks generally made a complete recovery in a week or so. He said they kept a bucket of coal oil and when bitten you'd stick your hand for foot in there and it would draw the venom out. I have no idea if that is true.
