There was a story a few years back about a guy in Florida who ripped off a house at night. To get away from the cops, he hid in the weeds of a retention pond or something like that.

He didn't come out.

back in the 70s the American alligator was critically endangered. Like all apex predators they breed slowly with high infant mortality, live a long time and tend to have low populations relative to territory. Apex predators cannot sustain unregulated harvest.

the policy or greatly restricted harvest and controlled breeding (harvesting eggs and returning 1 yr old gators to the wild) was obviously successful, perhaps the most successful wildlife conservation effort of all time.

the balance has tipped now far to the other side and it’s time to reopen the harvest and stop or greatly decrease the wild return of farm hatched animals. The wax lake delta where we hunt is absolutely overrun with alligators…it isn’t really an issue there (a wildlife refuge) but in populated areas there is no place for such an animal. The IUCN now lists the American alligator as “LC” (least concern)

Pay $100 per tail, without tags, and you'll see the population depleted immediately. I've swam within 10ft of 5 alligators while crabbing. I was young and dumb. I've seen 12 footers haul arse when they see a person. Florida needs to start destroying them.

Jesus. That place (HHI) is fricking infested and they have no fear of humans, and the Ohio mantra of "if people wouldn't feed them" or if "people wouldn't walk so close to the pond" just makes my blood boil.

I do believe in a healthy balance of nature vs development, don't get me wrong. But you get to a point where multiple times a year humans are being attacked and killed by the alligators (on HHI alone!), it's time to cull the alligator population. They are not an endangered species.

They are overpopulated and concentrated in a densely populated area and one of the apex predators has to go. Is it going to be humans that leave HHI? I doubt it. So be practical. Take the gators out. Make the gators fear humans again.

The irony is that HHI used to be owned by a Yankee financier (Alfred Loomis) who used the place as a hunting preserve.

Dude is actually pretty fascinating. Bit of a refined baw if you ask me:

Speaking of the population growth, I was checking out the spillway this weekend of a lake in MS I used to snorkel when I was a kid. Unusual clear water and could see big gar and spoonbill catfish. As I was looking at the water thinking I might come back and give another go at snorkeling a 6-7ft gator surfaces the water I know it probably isn't big enough to give an adult any trouble but I'd rather not swim with him and find out.
