I believe after a few hours of nothing, especially if they are rolling all around, I would have tried another fish to catch, and just try to salvage the trip. I'm sure this captain knew what the rolling of the tarpon meant. And if you don't decide to change your conquest, then it's your charter, your fault, imo. Ive been on several guides, hunting and fishing, and if we arent killing and catching, I try to figure out something else that the guides can accomadate. Or find another to catch these elusive tarpon, ie gaffing/spearing their rolling asses.

You are probably going to have trouble finding a Key West guide that will let you do that.

To answer your question about how much is a good tip I'll break it down what a deck hand or captain expects.
10% of the trip total is expected if they did there job
15% if you thought he did an incredible job
20% if it was one of your best trips ever and the whole crew did more than you expected. Very similar to what you would tip at a restaurant

I wouldn't generally tip less than 15%. BTW, I have some buddies who went out with Fish Commander and had a great time and got put on some serious fish (except they wanted more Bob Dylan on the music).
