Choppiest waves in the world. If you can surf FL, you can surf anywhere. I've traveled to a lot of places. Next year I will try to surf pipe.

I noticed how you say rifle and not gun like others... My dad was a marine and taught me how to hunt as a kid... Corrected me every time I said gun instead of rifle.
It's a camaraderie thing not a hunting thing... Campfire stories, food, and shooting the shite is just as important as the hunt. Don't leave early or complain and you're golden. If you see a deer, know how many yards it was, where it came out, what time, etc.... It's all about the story.
Hopefully you'll find the solitude and peace with nature to be comforting... It's easy to get caught up about where are the damn deer when you're in the stand but if you just relax and soak it up it is very therapeutic.
I'm sure I'll have a great time. I'm looking forward to getting to know her family a little better.
The Marines teach you it's a rifle or weapon. I'll slip up every once in a while and say gun though. The civilian in me is taking hold.

Slow down, that may be to much for them to handle on the first hunting trip.

Cant believe the Judge has not been declared a weapon of mass destruction yet. I mean has a more destructive weapon ever been created in the history of ever?

Depends on the range of your hunting but in my experience (12 years) you can't go wrong with a bolt action 30-06. Personally I hunt with Remington Model 700 with a 50 power 3-9 Leupold scope but that would cost you upward of a grand. I only spend that kind of money because it's my passion. If you really just want a gun for the occassional hunt then you could get a good deal like Remington 770 w/scope at Academy. Besides that your'e obviously going to need hunting clothing. If I had one piece of advice there, DO NOT GO CHEAP ON FOOTWEAR. Get a nice pair of boots like These are the pair I hunt with, theyre not insulated but my socks make up for it. I'm only 20 so there's probably some old timers on here with better advice, but like I said I've been doing this since my 8th birthday.

You should show up to the camp covered doe piss and face paint and declare "I hear they ruttin!"

When I was 20 the Granges were all the boot I ever needed. Now that I am no longer 20, I need some thinsulate in those bitches in cold weather!
DO NOT buy that damn 770. It is a unbelievable piece of shite and I'm ashamed of Remington for putting their name on it. If you know rifles you will know what I'm talking about when you pick one up. The 700 ADL isn't much more $$$ and is a hell of a lot more rifle.
Best advice yet.
What ever you do, DO NOT pull out a Judge. That's just crazy.

if I may hijack this thread for a second...don't waste your time. If its good all pros and bros will be out there giving you the shite eye and if its closing out its only really bodyboardable (unreal to see). Go down the road to Sunset or Waimea (if its manageable). Had a much better time there. The entire island is amazing though. Going on a trip to surf cloudbreak in Fiji, the gold coast of Australia, and New Zealand next year....absolutely can't wait.

All you gotta do is pull up the green jeans thread that dieseltiger posted last year. Read over it & tell the story while sitting around the camp. pure awesomeness!

RTRS,
do the following:
*Get some warm clothes
*bring some good whiskey / bourbon to the camp for the crew
*bring some steaks / stuff to grill at the camp
*if they are hunters they'll have a gun for you - don't waste money on that - bring your future FIL a Yeti Tundra 65 or 75 tan color as a thank you / i am nailing your daughter gift. The 65 will hold 1 quartered deer the 75 2.....he'll love ya!
*remember that if you get off the stand for any reason that they'll probably have 5 game cams waiting for your every move
***most important part - if you go on a morning hunt they probably have put out a deer decoy about 200 yards away from you. It will have about 8 points and you'll be able to see it as the sun rises.....do not shoot it!!!!

I haven't seen this posted...
You are going to need to shoot the rifle to set the scope. Bore Sighted does not mean Set. The scope will be off if new and unfired. Lots of new hunters have missed deer due to this.
Know the ballistics of your rifle out to your farthest shot. Lots of people write them on a notecard and tape to stock.
If you are doing a bunch of walking, start off cold with layers in your pack. You don't want to sweat on your way to a deer stand. You will be cold once you sit down and cool off. Use wool socks or some synthetic wick-away. Cotton will get wet and cold.
Binoculars are useful, allows you to glass area without as much movement. Also, not pointing rifle barrel at in-laws.
I would wash my clothes in non-UV detergent.
Obviously, Hunt the wind.
Already mentioned: Tell them you have never been.

So, You think it is "THAT" type of hunt???
Don't get caught taking a dump on the game cam...
nelatf: never considered that he would be getting "set up"....great call.
