I know dish soap in warm water works for wasps, assuming the same for hornets?

If it's within "range", I'd wait till about an hour after dark and simply throw about a pint of gas on the cone. NO, DO NOT LIGHT IT. The fumes alone will kill them over the course of the night. Those paper nests soak up gasoline like a sponge soaks up water. And as someone else here said, do not shine a flashlight beam on the nest after you stir em up. You could have your mother in law, I suppose, hold the flashlight and tell her to "Keep that beam focused on the nest so I can see it..."

Read the OP. The nest is in a decorative tree, so he does not want to kill it, but the nest.

Dishwashing liquid and water is THE answer here. But he needs a shite ton of it. I'd get a five gallon bucket myself for that size nest.

Hornets. You can use a fogger for bees after dark. Put it on the end of a pole and poke it right under the nest. Whatever stays after that you can get them the next night with the concentrated spray stream from the current sprays on the market today. Good Luck! And.....

Easy solution. Won't kill the tree.
ETA don't need a 2 gauge as shown.

I don't think a pint of gas thrown on the nest would drastically damage the tree, but hey, I ain't there, haven't seen the tree or the nest.

Never tried this method before, but I will tonight on some wasp nests that are in the horse barn. I'll let you know how it works out.

The question here is "Who is gonna bell the cat?" This sounds like a job for that guy who is good at the "Judy Chop". Can't remember his name...

I ain't trying to be a dick, but the obvious methods ain't gonna save his bush. (did I say thaaaaat)

I've actually just pulled nests off and ran like hell before, but this nest sounds like it's big as shite. I'm throwing soapy water on it and running like hell if it was me.

Hornets

Hornets are far more difficult and dangerous to control than paper wasps. The nests resemble a large, inverted tear-drop shaped ball which typically is attached to a tree, bush or side of a building. Hornet nests may contain thousands of wasps which are extremely aggressive when disturbed. The nests are often located out of reach and removal is best accomplished by a professional pest control firm.

A full wasp suit sealed at the wrists, ankles and collar is recommended when disposing of a hornet nest. Treatment can be accomplished by applying a wasp freeze-type, aerosol insecticide or dust formulation (Sevin, or Ficam,) directly into the nest opening. Hornet nests have a single opening, usually toward the bottom, where the wasps enter and exit. It is essential that the paper envelope of the nest not be broken open during treatment or the irritated wasps will scatter in all directions, causing even greater problems.

Following treatment, wait at least a day before removing the nest to ensure that all of the wasps are killed. If hornets continue to be observed, the application may need to be repeated. Experienced pest control operators will sometimes remove a hornet nest which is attached to a branch by slipping a plastic garbage bag over the intact nest and clipping it at the point of attachment. This technique should not be attempted by anyone else and should only be done at night with a wasp suit.

I think if it is a hornets nest just plug the hole tonight & haul it off

Only problem in this case is its a closed nest and the soap has to get on them to work. This is just going to piss them off.

I got stung in the head twice while playing golf this morning. Went to pluck a cypress ball out the tree to smash it with my lob wedge and they come bombing me about the head. It was turrible.
