Did you seriously think it was ok to let your dog go shite in their yard? How does one come to this conclusion? You bought the dog. The dogs shite is your problem. Not your neighbors.
I actually wish I lived next to you, b/c not only would my dog, but I would shite in your yard as well.

I had a dog that for awhile was very problematic for me to keep in the yard after we moved. I walked the yard and used bricks and chicken wire on the places with a gap in the bottom of the fence. Well, he dug them up and got out anyway, and I reinforced them, and he ended up chewing/biting/scratching at the bottom of the fence and broke the boards.
Long story longer, it got so bad that I but him in a cage while I was at work, and he even flipped the sage on its side, and pried the bottom away from the rest of the sage, got out, dug up the bricks, and busted fence and got out.
Sometimes shite happens, and dogs just want out, they have a lot of free time on their hands while you're at work.
Why should this be your neighbors' problem?
Whose problem is this?
Sometimes tough situations require making tough decisions.

Really?? Sounds like you should be ok with them killing your dog then, amirite?

Dog was collared? frick that bastard. An eye for an eye.

If dog is a problem there are two option kill it and dispose of it discretely or call animal control. To leave a note is simply begging for retaliation. Give him what he asked for.

You'd be bringing a shovel to a gun fight buddy. Lots of internet badasses in here.

But that's a big difference, you were taking active steps. It's the "frick you, my dog ain't botherin' nobody" and "I don't care" crowds that are the problem.
A good proactive step if somebody finds them self in such a situation may be to go to the neighbors in advance and let them know what you're dealing with, and to please call if your dog is loose, offering sincere apologies in advance.
You're showing respect, acknowledging the problem, acknowledging his property rights, and acknowledging responsibility.
I'll bet even the biggest dog hater on this board wouldn't have the heart to shoot the dog if you did this.

Alter.
You had me going for awhile, but you pushed it too far.
Back on topic, guy should have shot pit first (got to prioritize targets) and then should have shut up. I would love to hear the full story, but it seems the shooter is just an a-hole.
Personally, dogs don't bother me. If a dog is my yard, I will usually call it and see if I can catch it and see if it has a tag. If it has a tag, it gets a free ride/walk back home. If it doesn't have a tag it will probably be petted and sent on it's way.
Now, if a dog growls or threatens my son, whole different game.
Right now I have a whole different situation. I have new neighbors that have moved in next door that have a pet rabbit that they just let go outside by himself. He is black and white and named Oreo. He is cool and he lets me pet him, but he is not long for this world. My lab saw him one while loading up in my truck and chased him around for few seconds before I was able to call him off. Any dog would make quick work of Oreo. Plus, we have neighborhood cats that would love a nice tasty rabbit meal. I tried to explain that to my neighbors but I don't think they understand nature.

I'm not an alter. I stand behind what I wrote. People need to understand that no one else took responsibility for your pet other than you. If you're not responsible enough to keep your dog out of other peoples yards then you're not responsible enough to own a dog. The neighborhood isn't your dogs playground or toilet. It's other peoples private property. No one should have to approach a neighbor about feces in their yard. Like I said, if I see your dog once, no big deal. After several times, you're asking for it. Best thing to do is keep your dog in your own yard and by all means do not let your dog bark all day and night. In other words, obey the law and be considerate and others will be too but when you step across the line don't expect others to just stand by and take it. People are going to do something about it.

Yeah, I did, they all knew b/c they asked why I was always replacing fence boards
I'd never had a problem with him until we moved here and I'm guessing him not being able to see outside the fence bothers him, bc the previous yards were way smaller, but were chain fences.
The mentality like this guy where "OMG dog on the loose, guess I get to shoot/poison it and bury it in my yard" mentality is no better than the people that have dogs and just let them roam the streets all day/night.
