Thats pretty flat, but I don't handload right now. I'm talkin 600 plus yards.

Not that that's a shot that I'm normally trying to take, but if I'd had enough gun I'd have had a shot on a 170+ buck a coupla years ago that I could only take pictures of.

Naw it was bought for coyotes, did some calling. And have taken plenty of deer with this round. 100grain bullets will drop a deer anyday.

Na, my dad bought me and brother who is a year older than me .243's when I was 3 and he was 4.

A gun I will never let go unless it goes to my son or daughter and I have no doubt it can bring down a deer.

Very good point

or would you rather spend 500 on a nice savage with accu-trigger and a really nice piece of glass on top

I will put my savages up againts any of the other rifles. Absolutely love the savage with the accutrigger. I have 4 different rounds with the accutrigger and they are awesome.

Why don't you people just bow to Tikka... Better looking, just as accurate, cheaper, and it's cooler because it's made in Finland.

My bad i said something about a 243 also didn't know who he was talking to. But as you said, no doubt it will bring down a deer. Its definitely not my go to deer gun but i have no second thoughts about shooting a deer with a 243, there has been a many deer go down with that round

My dad took my brothers Browning .243 hunting and killed more deer with it than his 7mm Mag. He said I would take that rifle over it any day unless he's hunting a pipe line.

You really cant go wrong with the Rem. 700, Win M70, Browning X-Bolt or A-bolt.

The only thing I would tell you to consider is moving up to a 30cal. 308, 30-06, or my choice the 300 Win Mag.

It's all about shot placement but I've seen too many people that hunt with 243s and can't shoot for shite. I tracked a 10 point a few weeks ago that was shot with a 243.....never found it.

I agree with this. Figure out your budget. Figure out what glass is going on top, then back into the model rifle.

Leupold VXII (3-9x40 for around $250) or Zeiss Conquest ($400-500 range) are best values in my book, depending on your price range. If you really want to shell out some $$$, Swarovski glass is about a good as it gets.

Any of the rifles metioned are great rifles (Savage, Remington 700, Tikka T3, Browning A-Bolt or X-Bolt). Again, if you have serious coin, you could look into some custom jobs, or some other high end rifles like Sako (I think Tikka is made by Sako actually).

As far as calibers go, I don't get the argument of ammo being hard to find. So buy a couple of boxes. You're gonna drop close to $1000 on a rifle, but can't stomach $40/box for ammo? Unless you shoot a ton, you shouldn't go through maybe 2 boxes a year, so I just don't see it being a problem.

I would lean .270wsm right now if I was buying one, but currently shoot a .308. Just about anything .243 and bigger will kill everything that moves in Louisiana.

Sure it's about shot placement with any rifle or caliber.

I've shot 8-10 deer with my .243 (with a Leupold Var 3 scope) and found every one of them.

I remember a while back watching some videos of this older lady that smoked some deer with a .243. She dropped em dead in their tracks. My go to rifle is my .270 Rem 700, but there is one stand that I hunt with a .243 and I've never missed or lost a deer or hog with that rifle. i love it cause it's so light and compact. Just my 2 cents.

This.

People lose deer with much more powerful calibers. The weak minded blame the caliber only when it's not what they think of as being enough. Same shite with expandable heads.

I can agree with this. But most of the deer I have had to track shot by friends or (my fricking brother who is a miserable shot), it's always the same story. They don't hunt much or don't know their rifle. And it always ends up in a lost deer.

It's a mind set of "well, I have this bad arse .300, if I hit the deer, its dead mentality"

It's not way more anyway.

BTW, these discussions are hilarious. No one says anything bad about the .45 ACP when death is concerned. That's 400 to 600 ft-lbs of energy. .243? Over 2,000 with just about any round you buy.
