Ended up being just 1 sow.

Watched a doe for a while. Let her walk off. I’ll be back in the same spot this afternoon.

Man I wish it was turkey season, I had easy pickins earlier.

Super windy. Hopefully deer don't care since they live outside all the time. I'm ready, bring me one...

69° super windy. Says it’s out the south but it’s really out of all directions.
28 nosler

Caught glimpses of deer crossing back and forth in the bottom I hunted this morning, too far down to get a good look. Got down around 9:30 and went look at a spot I saw on the map. Didn’t like that spot so I sat on a log and ate a snack and took a break. Ended up walking back to the bottom, crossing it, circling around the big thickets on the edge, and getting into the hardwoods. It’s pretty open in here so shooting distance is good. Just gotta hope I don’t get busted first with this swirling wind.

Ran dogs with my 6 year old unsuccessfully all day at the camp. Siting behind the house now. It’s been a long day. We don’t hunt Sundays and it’s only getting hotter next week. Squirrels are feisty. Hopefully a big doe or decent buck shows.

Showing it’s not gonna get cold here until Thursday. Of course, Thursday morning is my last hunt up here. I’ll be picking up camp midday and headed home.
What’s everyone’s opinion on warmer weather during the rut? Over the years, I’ve killed multiple bucks here chasing doe’s between the 13th and 18th. So I would say they are rutting. How do yall think the weather will affect that? For what it’s worth, I’ll be in the woods regardless.

IMO when the does are in estrous (which has nothing to do with weather) the bucks are gonna act like every college boy in Tigerland on a Friday and Saturday night. I’m perfectly content to hunt the rut in whatever the weather is doing.

It appears the warm weather has delayed the rut in South Texas. And it’s been crap most of the week too.

The Browning Gold did the job this morning, took two longbeards out of a group of 5. And only used two shells, I’m getting better.

Passed on a 10 point buck I watched for an hour, only for the lease manager to tell me I should have shot it because he doesn’t want the crab claw out here. And it would have been a personal best for me.

Hoping he comes back this evening.

Hunting a spot I haven’t been to in over a decade. My old man is hunting the spot he used to drop me off at in the mornings and I’m in his killing tree. 4 water moccasins on the way in, one eye level.

IMHO yes they will still be in that 7-10 day window you have seen bucks daylight. The difference is does will move and feed more causing buck to “chase” more when it’s cold. They are breeding even if it’s 90 it’s just how much movement you will see.
I’m a firm believer in narrow down what is the days that you have seen mature bucks during daylight and hunting those days hard!!

Heard 2 shots all day, nothing close. Only saw the turkeys. Post-rut up here is tough. But my stubborn arse will keep going.

Yes. When the does do their thing them bucks aren't waiting on weather. Nature happens with or without optimal weather

It just sucks to drag and clean a deer when its 75F

You nailed it. Cold weather gets the does on their feet in daylight.

I hate moccasins but definitely december moccasins. Those are el salvador prison moccasins. JTTF! Shot one at lake ramsey wma a few years ago in november .22 rat shot. This is why i wear snake boots above 70F

Imagine getting hit in december by a snake. Thats just not fair
