The slightly used truck market is insane right now. 2020 GMC Sierra SLT are selling for for than what I paid for mine new.

I don’t understand why anyone is buying used trucks right now

Semi conductor shortage... Sony bought up most of the supply when they got wind of a shortage coming.

I’m stupid bc I don’t understand why someone would pay nearly the same money for a used vs a new truck? Ok then.

I’ve heard this but there are still plenty new trucks around. Fewer than normal but they’re not rare. The Ford dealership near my house has hundreds of F150s on the lot. I was there last weekend.

Yes.
Supply and demand.
Also the price of trucks has skyrocketed.
I paid $48k for my Platinum F150 in 2015 (not a brag on the trim).
In order to get basically the same truck, but "newer", I'd have to out of pocket close to 20k.
So no, you can't get a new truck for the same price as a comparable used one, even at today's prices.
What you can get is a 2015 truck, at 2015 prices, in 2021. The demand has simply erased depreciation.

You won’t have to be mean, Baw. This isn’t the OT. If people are actually paying $68k for new Platinums then I guess I’m just out of touch. And those buyers are stupid.
I was last in the market in 2017 and new XLTs could be had for low to mid $30s (sticker prices were mid $40s, so dealers were coming off about $12k from sticker). I looked at XLTs a few weeks ago and stickers were still in the mid-high $40s. I didn’t talk to any salesmen though. So you’re saying people are paying sticker prices for new XLTs, of way north of $40k now, and that a used 2017 XLT would still fetch low $30s?
That’s crazy. I paid $34k for my 2016 Tundra. Tempting to sell it now if I can recoup all the money.

Dealerships here in Houston have plenty trucks on the lot too. I’m not saying the chip shortage is a ruse, but I’m also skeptical that inventories are so desperately low.

Sticker on a tundra Platinum is like $56k. That’s 3k more that the sticker I paid on mine back in 2011.
ETA. Maybe it was $51k. I don’t remember exact but I do remember I paid $40k for it.

Im in the market for a new truck since my GMC with 175K has the dreaded lifter tick, so it wont be long until it dies.
Going Ford this time, a base model truck, stx w/ 20's, center console, and small v6 ecoboost is 37k before TTL. thats the best i can find.

called a company to ask about a truck part and they had it and he mentioned the chip situation, said it has the whole industry grinded to a halt.

Baton Rouge has a higher murder rate than Memphis.
besides that, just like Baton Rouge, in Memphis most crimes are in specific areas. I don't go there.
