Me and some friends of mine from high school would do it all the time from Vicksburg to natchez and port Gibson to natchez and camp out along the way. The problem with kayaks is the limited amount of gear you can bring especially on such a long trip. We would do one or two nights at the most and the biggest problem was not enough room for all the beer. A long trip would require some planning for sure as for as stops and getting supplies would go. It's dangerous to an extent but not bear what some ppl are gonna say "you'll die" ect.

If you are white and your friend is black, I would raft it. Makes for a better story when you die.

My neighbor and some of his friends are doing this in pieces. Once a year for a week and a half they go and start where they left off last year. In Minn the river is just a creek at the headwater but if you go too early its still cold and there may be trees down blocking part of the river. There are also some very big lakes that have to be crossed that with the right wind can sink you.

A good way to drown
Diesel used to do it near BR to get back into bar pits and stuff. He made it sound like it's not bad if you stick close to the bank and know how to handle wake off those freighters that come through.
Like the guy above said, distance would be a burnout. You can't carry shite on a yak like you would need to make that any less than miserable.

Hundreds have done it. Canoes or kayaks or boats made of two liter bottles. I've wanted to do it for years. One guy wrote that the first few hundred miles are easy and you will acquire the skills needed for the tougher parts.
Do it.
Do it.

I actually read a blog about the guys who do it a week at a time. That sounds like a cool way to have a meaningful family trip. I don't think I would get burned out on it. If it gets to where you feel burned out you can all pull over on a sandbar and make camp for a few days.

I saw a video on someone who did it from Minnesota to NOLA.
This was a buddy of mine. It was definitely a cool looking experience

I watched a show on Nat Geo called Mississippi River Quest that showed three guys that started out in a little creek in Minn. and went all the way to the gulf. They did the first part in canoe or kayak and then the rest on a pontoon boat. It was three 2 hour episodes.
Google Mississippi River Quest and you many be able to find it online. I

I saw that show. Very cool. One of those guys built the two liter bottle boat and floated down.

I've kayaked several sections of the MS river. It's really a nice rive with lots of sand bars at normal river levels. It's not what most people think of from crossing the ms river bridge in BR. Up north it's a recreational river where people water ski and stuff.
You'd need a sea kayak made for touring. You'd need more of a stable boat than a fast design. My boat is a fast design and it will hold around 350 pounds I think. Small hatches make it necessary to choose your supplies/ gear carefully.
I've thought about doing it, but I would do it to see how fast I could finish it.
Side note: I have flipped my kayak in the MS river up near Vicksburg. White cap conditions. I got swept out of the river and down a spillway called Pawpaw chute. I had to grab a tree root to myself out just before a debri pile. I was about to let go of the kayak and swim for it when I saw the exposed tree root. This was during th record flood year 3-4 years ago. I carried the kayak through the trees, back to th river and finished the race

had some friends do the great loop in a 14ft aluminum boat. they brought a small tent and camped at the docks next to the boat or got hotel rooms along the way.
GL, sounds fun, be careful
