I grew up with a Rem Model 7 .243. I have killed way more deer with it than I have any of my other rifles. Only had to track one and that is because I gut shot him, but we found him anyway. .243 is a great round.

I'm not discrediting the round, but just saying that a .243 is also an excellent round an probably more popular even though the 7mm-08 is gaining popularity.

No way I would buy my kid a .243 over a 7mm-08. I see no point in short changing yourself the power for (as good as I can tell) no appreciable increase in recoil.

If I had to buy one I'd probably agree with you. Since I have one that's been passed down so long..my future children have no choice.

Agree without that kemosabe

I grew up on a 6.5x55 and I'm still pilling up deer with it.
This x10! My Dad just bought a Ruger M77 in this caliber. My 7 year old Daughter has shot it with me assisting of course. It has almost no recoil at all. Plus side is it's gonna leave a trail. Leave the .243's and .223's to the coyotes and varmints. I know plenty of deer has fell to both calibers but I wanna hit them with something that's gonna do more than just punch a pencil hole thru them. The 6.5 is a legit caliber

I have a savage rifle/scope combo (.243) in camo with two boxes of bullets that I will sell you.
I bought them with the intention to give to my nephew, but just proved to me that he is not ready for a real deer rifle. So, it is still new and unfired. But I threw away the box it came in.
Cost of rifle and scope: maybe $325
The shells are Hornady superformance. I'll have to check the price on those.
Let me know if you are interested.

It's one of the most popular calibers in europe for a reason. I've never recovered a 6.5 bullet from a deer.

I hit a huge buck in the round shoulder bone. Bullet exploded. No exit. He still barely went 30 yards.

I have a 7 year old son that wants a rifle. I was going to go with a .223 but do you really think a 7mm-08 has that little recoil?

My brother hit his first one with the .243 in the spine. Bullet and backbone exploded, no exit, backstrap was half waste, but he laid down right there.

From what I'm told there's it's pretty much the same as a .243. Which doesn't kick much at all. I think my brother's .243 kicks less than my crack barrel 20 gauge I got as my first gun.

Just came across this table..
It appears that the 7mm-08 is much higher than a .243.

All things equal (a remington 700 in each caliber) I cannot notice much difference in the recoil. Most people I know these days start their kids with 7mm-08 and I have heard no complaints about the recoil being to stiff.

I have a friend with a 7mm-08 that I will let my son shoot over the next month or so.
I'm guessing a youth model Remington 700 is 7mm-08 is going to be hard to find?

243 will be the most common answer, but I prefer the 7mm-08. Both are plenty good enough for deer though.
Has anybody tried the "reduced recoil" ammo? How bad does a 270 or 30-06 kick with the reduced recoil ammo and a limbsaver? May be another option to consider to keep the kid from wanting to upgrade in a couple of years.

Letting him shoot one is obviously the best thing you can do. Stock fit also has more to do with perceived recoil than caliber IMO. I can shoot a .30-06 that fits well all day, but a .30-30 that doesn't fit well hurts.
My suggestion is buy him a full sized 700 and get a youth stock for it. That way he can just swap stocks in a few years. A full sized rifle is very easy to find and so is a youth stock, where as a youth 700 may not be the easiest thing to get your hands on.

I'm getting him a compound bow for Christmas and will get him the rifle as a post Christmas/early b-day gift so he can be ready for next year.
He's not very coordinated and will need a lot of bench time before I let him shoot at a live animal.

I'd go with 7-08 as many have said, but deffinatly look for a real rifle, not the single shot rossi/h&r.
