I find it strange when someone is buying a pistol that so many people automatically assume it's a carry gun or that it being the perfect gun for a self defense situation is the top (or only) priority.

I can't speak for others, but I didn't make that assumption. Its just as puzzling to me however, for a poster to not consider it as a distinct possibility. The OP didn't really give any details as to what his intended purpose was.

I would never consider it. Besides, basically everyone makes a 1911. You're being a bit disingenuous here.

True. When I get mine I want something that's fun to shoot mainly.

And I guess I'm just getting a little butt hurt because I'm planning on getting a 1911 for my first pistol

Or maybe second now, because I might get a cheap .22 revolver soon.

You would never consider it a possibility that when someone asks you about a handgun... that they might want to carry it?

So?

I would never consider carrying a handgun.

If a poster is asking about his first handgun, and mentions a 1911, there is no way I'm thinking carry. You just don't like my points, so you built a straw man.

If it is such an unusual choice, why are so many made?

The 1911 as a first handgun.

This. And half of the guns people say they carry I wouldn't want to carry. If I ever got a CCW I'd get an airweight .357 or .38 special or something.

There's definitely no way I'd want to carry a full size pistol.

Whoa. Back up.

You need to go back and re-read this thread. That's not what happened at all.

When did I say it was an unusual choice?

Its a great first gun. When did I say it wasn't?

if you are dead set on a 1911 frame than go with a Taurus, it will run you about 250-300 dollars cheaper than a Kimber because all parts are manufactured here in America.

What is your budget OP?

Buy the most gun you can afford and be done with it.

The STI Trojan might be worth checking out in the same price range as what you linked.

I've heard that carrying a Kimber is about as convenient as carrying a boat anchor. Not sure if this is true though...

25 ounce aluminum frame...no idea if that is heavy, and will never carry.

Mr. J. Evans,

The 1911 is a fine handgun w/ good reputation as as a defensive handgun. Kimber has had a well deserved reuptation for many years, but from what I read on the 'net the past few years, they seem to be having problems w/ quality control and customer service. I'm fully aware that one can be lead wrong from what one reads on the 'net, but it would be foolish to not be aware of a potential problem.

Having said that, I really wouldn't make any other suggestions to you without first knowing what the intended use is for your new handgun.
