I'd say a revolver. Not sure on caliber

If I were to get a semi strictly for concealed carry I'd get a Keltec Pf-9

well, i got an inside source on glocks... was thinking about a baby 40..

Seems like a really compact .40 wouldn't be very fun to shoot. My buddy's dad has a Springfield XD subcompact in .40 and he said it's hard to shoot.

quote:probably true.. But, would leave in truck console and the only time i would ever pull the trigger is when it's "me or them" situation..

Well, it is glock, so you could rest assured it's gonna go boom when you pull the trigger. Wouldn't be a bad idea IMO.

People will rip me, but I rock a Ruger p95 and I'm about to get an LC9. The p95 will run you ~$300 and the LC9 will run you ~$350. Gun snobs will tell you they're cheap, but I shot all the time and my p95 does well. I don't need to spend $600 on something to shot targets when a $300 gun will do the same.

Those are cheap guns..
j/k,,, hell, i don't know one from the other..

I've got a 40 cal smith and wesson. I have shot a few handguns and it is my favorite. My wife has a 38 spl. She loves it and can shoot it very well. Of course the 38 is an upclose gun.

you can basically take any of the $400-$600 pistols from any of the major manufacturers and your gonna have a pretty damn good 1st gun. The rest is personal preference. Decide what caliber you want and go to the store and hold a few of 'em and see what you like. Place to start at least
S&W
Glock
Springfield
Ruger
Beretta
etc etc

For concealed carry i use either a 1911 in 45, commander length, slightly shorter barrel or a Springfield XD in 9mm, 4 inch barrel. Some would say big for concealed carry but works with right holster.
Can't believe no one said Colt.
For a woman, a revolver. Slides on autos can be hard.

Smith and Wesson M&P Pro series in either 9mm or .40. These guns have a great trigger and are super reliable. Also Crawdaddy I may be interested in the PX4

a 1911 is not an appropriate 1st gun,
I kind of see where you're coming from with that. I just wouldn't be able to suggest that someone not buy a 1911 if they wanted to. First gun, last gun, doesn't matter. I am in love with that weapon.
To the OP, this thread gets done about once a week. Do a search.
Or, go to the gun shop and ask to look at a Glock, a Springfield xd, Beretta, and Sig. Lay them out and handle each one. Buy the one that feels the best to you. It would be tough to go wrong with any of those.

I'm looking probably in the $300-$450 range, can I get a decent starter pistol for this much?
Posted on 8/24/11 at 8:47 pm to sloopy
Look at Glocks and Springfields. Not sure exactly what they're running right now, but if you can't afford them, I would save a little more until you can. I honestly would not buy a cheaper pistol then that.
