When hunting you usually are climbing in and out of boats, up and down trees etc.

You should not be doing this with a loaded weapon.

I totally agree. When I first started hunting as a kid, there were certain steadfast rules to follow and this was one of them.

"Should" being the key word... You should never point a weapon at something you're not willing to destroy. Well we all know how that works out. A lot of hunters walk through brush with a round in the chamber in case they pop up on a 48 pt sasquatch...

There's lots of good guns out there. If its not for personal defense, your options expand significantly.

I'll recommend something you can put a .22LR conversion on, for obvious reasons. 1911's... Glock ... Browning Hi-Power... and I'll give my obligatory personal plug for CZ 75.

Get a .45 or 9mm and a .22LR kit to go with it.

Sig Sauer (pretty pricey), XDM, or Glock. I have fired all of them and they are really all excellent weapons with excellent reliability. I recommend a .40, because it has great knock down power and fires pretty accurately. Plus if you can get the police mags, it holds a reasonable ammount of ammo. See if you can find a few friends with different handguns and if they will let you shoot them. Kind of like riding a motorcycle...... when you shoot it, you will know which one is right for you.

Errrr... police mags and civilian mags are one in the same in the great state of LA. But you get points for calling them mags and not clips!

I will have to take this up with the guy I buy my handguns from. If I am not mistaken, he charged me an extra $10 ea. mag to "upgrade" them to police issue.......... Guess I should have checked into it, but with the prices for everything I usually get from him, I cant complain too much!

Unless he provided some kind of service like upgrading the mag springs to a higher power, which is unlikely/useless.

i gotta find my gf a gun now, whats a good gun for chick? i'm thinkin a 9mm, my .45 is too much for her.

after our recent break in, she is ready to be packin

I recommend a revolver in either 357 Mag or 38 Spec, whichever she can best handle. Good manufacturers include S&W and Ruger. Charter Arms has had problems in the past, but I think they're beyond that now. I've had good experience w/ Taurus revolver's, although others have not. I have one Rossi revolver. I've been pleased w/ it, but it is 10-12 years old so the quality may have changed some since then. In my experience, revolvers are generally a lot easier for most inexperienced shooters and women to shoot accurately and handle safely than are semi-autos.

If the main use for the gun is to be carried in a car or kept at home, I'd suggest a larger and heavier gun. Generally, smaller and lighter guns are more difficult to shoot well that larger and heavier guns. For car/home use I'd, suggest a revolver w/ a 4-6" barrel. If she's not recoil sensitive, make a it 357 Mag. If she's recoil sensitive, get it in 38 Spec. If the gun's for cncealed carry, I'd suggest a 5 shot snubbie w/ a lightweight frame, chambered in 38 Spec. Snubbies in 357 Mag are a lot more difficult to handle so require a lot more training.

I recommend buying a 22LR of the same action/size as her gun. 22 LR guns and ammo are inexpensive and recoil/muzzle blast are minimal. Be sure she uses ear plugs AND muffs w/ all the shooting.
