243 has definitely served its purpose but I would like something more likely to leave a good blood trail to follow if needed.

Swap bullets, nosler partitions or federal fusions should both exit and give devastating terminal performance.
243 is plenty of gun to kill deer and get blood trails with the right bullet.

I make mistakes about every minute.

Some mistakes are funny and deserve a laugh. Handholds made me laugh.

I have. They do not group well. I actually had swat team members try to sight the gun in with them but the wouldn’t group.

That’s a gun problem not a 243 problem, might be the whole problem. If you’re looking for a little more bullet without a lot more recoil, look at a 7mm-08, 6.5CM, or 308 with a bonded or monolithic bullet and your kid will have a light recoiling deer killing tool for life.

Get a bull barrel… and there’s better ammo. 270, 270 wsm, 308, 7-08….

These are some wonderful responses. I have a child that has been hunting with a .243 and I would like to step up a notch. .243 has definitely served its purpose but I would like something more likely to leave a good blood trail to follow if needed.

My 9 yo grandson killed his first rifle deer a few weeks ago using a 243 and 100 gr bullets. He put a single shot through the lungs and the deer ran 50 yards. I've become more tolerant about using the 243 for youth hunts. The 243 is a fine gun, especially w/ 100 gr, non-fragile bullets and a good presentation. My concern is w/ bad angling shots I think the 243 is bestt used when the hunter is patient and waits for a good shot. I hope to take my grandson hunting tomorrow and he'll use the 243.

As I mentioned earlier, I started my son on a 308 Win w/ reduced recoil loads I hand loaded. I kept his shots to <100 yards. A reduced recoil load can kill quite well as long an appropriate bullet is used. I've killed a bunch of deer w/ handguns running rounds minimally faster, or at the same velocity, than a rifle reduced load and they kill just fine. A Ballistic Tip that's too fragile at 3000 fps may perform well at 2500 fps.

A few years ago, I bought a 7-08 for grandkids to use. I've worked up a load for it using the 120 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip, but I didn't have them loaded up when my grandson when hunting. In your situation, I'd start looking for a gun in 260 Rem, 6.5 CM,7-08 or 308 Win that has reduced recoil loads. 270 or 30-06 would be good as well, but will have a little more recoil than the others that use less powder.

Keep us updated.

Yep. Oldest son shoots 100gr ballistic tips out of a .260 and his lefty brother shoots the skinnier 95 grain version out of a .243. Both started around 2400fps and they kill fantastically with good blood.
