Mobile Cty Sheriff says ALEA harrassing boaters

Any thoughts on this? Am I missing something? It's not common to see LEOs openly in opposition.

Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch is working on a boater's rights campaign after another year of hearing from concerned citizens about one or two officers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's (ALEA) Marine Patrol Division.
"I don't look at it as enforcing the law, I look at it as harassing boaters," Burch said on FM Talk 106.5 with Sean Sullivan.
While he understands the need for law enforcement to ensure people's safety on the water, he believes some incidents are unnecessary.
"I guess the most egregious things that someone gets stopped for is making a wake," Burch explained. "You know, that is so subjective. Every single boat design drafts differently and you know, my boat being a tri-toon, it doesn't make hardly any wake at all."

Sounds like the Sheriff doesn't like having to abide by civilian regs.

This is like the greatest job in the world, how can you screw it up. On the water, bikinis, not a lot of a certain demographic. All you have to do is not piss people off.

All the green jeans I’ve run into on the water have been laid back except for one where I fricked up and knew it.
I did run into a St. Tam. Sheriff on the Tchefunte than was a Royal cock sucker. Dude acted like he was auditioning for the secret service. And I was not doing a damn thing wrong. He even dropped my boat registration in the water.

Many years ago (50), there was a LDFW officer in this area of north Toledo Bend. His name was Kit Carson. I will never forget him. He was the orneriest one SOB. We had many incidents with him. One in particular, my PawPaw and I were white perch fishing and he came up on us. He didn’t even slow down and t-boned our boat. Knocked me into the water. I thought my PawPaw was going to kill him. Another, he checked us on 3 different occasions. Like something was going to change from the first time. He is probably dead by now. But I will never forget him.
Most officers I’ve run into have been very courteous and professional. Make the uniform they wear proud. Thank you for your service.

Most places that I know of, the sheriff is elected.
The fisheries guys are not.
Some of the sheriff's boating constituents are probably donors and friends.
There may be some relevance.
In Livingston and Ascension Parish, the deputies seem slightly more laid back than the green jeans. But in general, around here if you don't act a fool, or speed thru a no wake zone, all's good.

The Aquatic Green Jeans that I've met on the water were assholes. Unnecessarily.
The Land Green Jeans I've met were nice. But the ones on the water were just power tripping like crazy.

Luck of the draw I guess. I ran into some coast guarders in Delacroix that were strait up bros. Gave me a boarding slip as proof of inspection. I said what is this for and he said so the state guys don’t frick with you.
