The only enjoyment to be had from a boutique knife is knowing you spent a bunch of money on a knife. They're just silly.

Get a block full of every sani safe made, get good with a honing steel, and youre in the best shape a man can be in when it comes to carving up meat or cleaning fish or peeling onions or whatever else a man might use a fixed blade knife for.

I have one Dexter butcher knife and a Victoronix boning knife that I use often. I use that Victoronix for filleting redfish and deboning deer.

I’d love a MK or Kestrel but I can’t get myself to spend the money. My Outdoor edge and Buck has been doing just fine all these years. Maybe one day when my 3 kids are off the payroll I’ll just buy random stuff like boutique knives.

Sounds like you are on the cusp exploring the world of makers like Winkler, Liam Hoffman Jaegers or Iz Turley or a hundred others!

I have a Nimravus, a Seki Seal SOG (full size, not the pup) and an old generic German fixed blade that was for the "Rambo" market in the 1980s.The Nimravus has a great balance to it and the SOG is a man's knife, for sure.

For Dawson, I think I might be a Contractor guy. I was also looking at the ESEEs, as well.

I have a bunch of folders. My old BM Presidio axis is a great knife, but just too heavy to carry for casual use (plus it would eat pants if just carried with the clip - it is sheath only, so might as well be a fixed blade). I've had great luck with folders. Rat 2, a Riuke flipper that is just a lot of knife for the money, a PM2 (I know, but this is probably Spyderco's masterpiece folder), and my new carry knife is a Cvivi Cogent which is a great all around folder.

I like my Victoronix Hunter in orange (yes, because it is the knife from the Martian). I like the Rat 2 so much I got a Rat 1 in D2. Even though I don't have particuarly big hands (NTTAWWT), the slightly larger folders like the Presidio and Rat 1 do seem more comfortable to me. I guess I'm used to working with a bigger tool.

I was in a fixed blade kick for a few years. I have a Hogue EXF01, it’s a hefty blade. I had a big Esee knife I carry hunting. Those things are damn indestructible. Various blades I’ve picked up. Don’t like the SOG knife. It feels cheap.

I have a little Benchmade in S90 that will slice your fingertip off before you even know you’ve cut yourself. I bought a fist edition Meatcrafter that I use the hell out of. Sent it in twice for lifesharp. When they released the water series, I bought the 9” filet knife. I know that’s crazy. But I’ve cleaned and deboned I don’t know how may snapper with that knife to the point where I’m pretty sure my uncle IL bought one too. Benchmade takes a lot of my money.

Dad gave me a little Smith and Sons fixed in magnacut that’s a nice little knife.

I think they did a disservice to it. The original Seal 2000s (or whatever the branding was) were originally made in Seki and had great Japanese steel. The pup became a massive seller for them and the big knife fell by the wayside (or maybe it was just too expensive to make to turn a profit). I agree the handle doesn't feel premium, but the blade of my early 2000 model Seal SOG was up to any production knife of the day.

I just have the Nimravus and the Presidio. But they're top notch. I also had the benefit of military discounts on those, so I don't feel like I overpaid. Have considered an AFO or an Infidel. Can't part with quite that much for just a toy (in the latter's case). And Benchmade customer service is second to none.

ETA: And I forgot to mention ealier - I have a (discontinued) SOG Pentagon Elite folder. While that handle doesn't feel premium, either, it has "Arc" lock (their version of the BM Axis, which they must have either licensed for a time) and is as smooth an opening/closing knife that I've held. I gave my original away to a friend who was extremely fond of it and I was able to grab a "new old stock" specimen after they were discontinued.
