OK, wait. I misunderstood. The Jeep is actually a 4WD model it just has a missing front drive shaft?

She would have bought it anyway, but it seems very odd unless the guy didn't know either.

Well, you can, fairly easily replace the missing drive shaft DEPENDING on the reason for it's non-existence. There are several reasons why someone would remove it. For instance, if you lift a vehicle beyond a certain amount, you may need a different, longer shaft. That doesn't seem to be the case here though. Some possibilities could be that the shift mechanism was not disengaging when taken out of 4WD or maybe even worse, the front diff is trash and by removing the drive shaft it simply works a free axle.

That was my first thought(Some larger problem)

We will deal with that later if we ever decide to sell. 4WD was not what she was after anyway.

Or even check to see that it was possible to engage 4WD? Lack of a shift lever would have been a clue.

Two wheel drive JK's only came in 4 door models if I'm remembering correctly.

The removing of the drive shaft could have been for something as simple as a bad u joint.

If I had to guess I would say the previous owner was trying to locate front end noise, figured it was a bad u joint so they pulled the drive shaft to isolate the issue. Probably no big deal if the removal of the driveshaft fixed the noise, too bad you won't know because you don't have the shaft.

If the jeep has some goofy front end rattling noise it might be a bigger problem with the axle itself.

TlDR; Probably not a big deal, but it could be a big deal.

We drive it with no top all the time, so we hear everything. Right now, the only noise is the brake issue.

Non of the TJ/JK jeep had locking hubs. they would have had to pull the inner shafts if the carrier or spiders were trashed.

I went down to Louisiana this weekend to help with flood recovery. The house we were in yesterday was this older couple. Not elderly but they have grandkids. He needed some help with a travel trailer they were living in until the house was ready for them to move back into. We were going to get the taping and mud work done on the drywall so they can paint and move beds back inside. We were standing around when we got there and he asked who the Jeep belonged to, pointing to my TJ. He told me he has an old Willy back in his barn he'd show me later. We needed something for the trailer and walked back to the barn and this thing is awesome. He had renovated it and said he's had it since before he was married as a young man. I was walking around and saw an old FC jeep back there too. It was a little rusty but he said it just needs a little work to get running. I had never seen one in person and it was neat seeing an old beast.

Anyone know if a hard top will fit over a bikini top channel on the windshield frame? Looking to get one for my YJ.

Doesn't the bikini use the same front channel as the regular soft top?

Nice looking jeep. I'd get you a spiderweb shade for the summer months. Other mods will depend on how much money you want to spend.
