Son’s .308 is a Ruger Compact, 16.5” barrel. 3x9 scope. Slide the safety forward with your thumb. Certainly as easy to handle as a .30-30 lever gun.
And I’ve watched that kid make a 300 yard kill with said .308. The woods of the Deep South can quickly give way to a power line or cutover. Why limit yourself?

Sounds like your son has used his Ruger a lot and is very familiar w/ it. I'm sure he could jump a deer at short range and make a snap shot if there's one to be made. My point is that there are situations where a 30-30 is not an inferior gun compared to a 308, especially if one doesn't hunt power lines or cut overs. As for me, I've never had a 30-30, but I do respect both the gun and the hunter who knows how to use it. That's one of the good things about America....one can choose what gun one wants to use.
