Anything by Peter Capstick: Death in the Long Grass, Man Eaters of Tsavo, Death in the Dark Continent, etc.

Also, for humor, the Patrick McManus books are great.

You just described my 13 year old reading list. I am 51. If you get into the Capstick books you can feel yourself in Africa.

But Hatchet is a great book. I read it after my 11 year old read it twice.
