I realize they show boundaries on private and public lands as well as layouts , but would these type of apps be useful in regards to like the Honey Island Sawmp or other heavily wooded areas . I have not used the apps so I’m not sure what types of layouts they have available but would it be more useful than just looking at google earth and just viewing the tops of a heavily wooded area ?
Thanks for the info and input

It’s not magic but onx will let you switch to “leaf off” layer, basically just winter, which allows you to see where hardwoods are. The other useful thing is recent imagery. It isn’t high res, but it’ll show you a map from two weeks ago, so if there’s logging going on you can tell where it’s gotten to more recently than google maps updates.

Thanks , I didn’t know it could do that , appreciate the info . I know you could pin stands or trails , just wasn’t sure what all it could do .

I use HuntStand but don’t pay for the premium features. But the premium has updated monthly sat views and tree cover as well. It also can be used without cell service if you download your hunt area. My favorite feature is being able to measure distances and see wind direction laid over a property and how it will changed over the course of the day.
A lot of my buddies use onx and it’s legit but I started with HuntStand and have too many pins to swap out now lol.
If I was starting out from scratch and was more focused on public land and out west I would go with onx. Local deer lease the free app HuntStand will be way better than Google earth.

Ya I’m not going out west anytime soon , lost some family land so I figured I’d start hunting public locally . I was trying to figure out which app would be the best to purchase based on the areas I would hunt . When I was a kid i would walk the trails Honey Island but everyone does the same , now that I have a boat I can go further into it as well as other areas and was just looking for the best bang for my buck , no pun intended

ONX also just came out with a Lidar layer option which is supposed to remove vegetation.
I’ve not had a chance to play around with it. I use my OnX primarily out west on big game hunts. I know my son uses it duck hunting to find land owners to get permission to field hunt.
