Oh I know. If this ringing gets any louder it will be all I hear.
Huh?
Between the shooting & these damn oil rigs I'll be looking for an aid soon.
On a side note I can't hear the Mrs bitching

BIL has got one in the .308 & it shoots really well & since it is short the women & kids are able to handle them better

I've always preferred shorter barrels as well.

That's the Ruger Scout rifle. I've heard nothing but good things.

Somebody fed you a line of BS.

They're also stiffer (TWSS) and will probably shoot a few thousanths of an inch tighter at 100000 yards than a long barrel.
That's really the trade off with a shorter barrel - you get less flex, so tighter groups are possible, but you lose velocity, and therefore range, particularly lethal range.

.308 is rather insensitive to barrel length.

no they didnt, I looked it up after I posted. it doesn't really apply to this rifle since its a 18", but less than 18" and all the powder doesn't burn and you lose velocity, decreasing the range at which you get appropriate fragging and the bullet "tumbles" in impact
LINK
but yeah, it would probably have literally zero impact on anyone here including myself

First time deer hunting this year. I've had my eye on the Ruger American in .270. It is only offered in the standard size.
Not to start a war but am I better off getting the standard in .270 or compact in .308?
Thanks OB.

Taste great or less filling?
Both are good calibers.

As a general rule of thumb, a non-magnum round will lose 25-50 fps for every 1" of length removed from a barrel. An 18" barreled 308 Win will lose about 100-200 fps compared to a 22" 308. As long as the hunter knows his gun, it's trajectory and is not hunting at extremely long range, the lost velocity is prolly not important. The question is, what does the shorter barrel gain in improved handling and, for some at least, improved balancing? A carbine length gun may balance better, or worse, than a longer gun.
Only you can answer these questions. A shorter barreled 308 Win is still a VERY potent whitetail hunting round. One of my go to guns when deer season rolls around is a 14" barreled bolt action handgun in 308 Win. I get about 2500 fps from it. It's never let me down, as long as I've done my part.
As far as "tumbling on impact", that shouldn't be a problem as long as the velocity is adequate and the barrel twist is appropriate for the bullet weight/configuration. One shouldn't have to worry about tumbling w/ the barrel lengths being discussed here. Even w/ my 14" barrel, the hunting bullets I use don't tumble.

1/2 of one, six of another....Do you want a short barreled carbine or a longer barreled rifle?

That's what it comes down to. I've always liked the looks and feel of a shorter carbine. And it will still reach out far enough for any shots I take.
