Anyone hunting land you are working on should know you are going to be out working right? If so, an your companion stays close to you I see no reason it would ever get shot. If the dog likes to go roam while you work then I question its saftey and the quality of the companionship you brought it along for.

they should know that they are hunting on land that was bought and owned for timber production. They often do not understand this, as seen when they get pissed when loggers move onto the property during hunting season.

Like I said before, I often bring my dogs to work with me in the fall and winter because it's cooler outside making it easier on them, there is more water for them to play in and drink, and there are fewer ticks, snakes, alligators, etc. to harm them. The downfall is the hunters.

There are many times that I may park on one road and head off and not see my truck again for hours, crossing several roads or pipelines in the process. While my dogs do not run off far from me (rarely ever out of sight, and I don't work in a park, so 40-50 yards usually is out of sight)they do run around quite a bit and stay ahead of me, meaning they almost always break out of the woods and onto roads and pipelines before I get to them. Out of the 6 guys in my office, I know 4 of us routinely take dogs out with us for one reason or another. Of course, the dogs are always wearing collars and we havent had any problems in the past, but that's not to say some jackass wont pop off a shot one day because my dog ran off a deer he saw.

According to the law. Since most here wont view the link Ill quote it for yall. I probably wouldnt shoot a dog I knew was a pet. I just dont see why people here would get pissed off if it happened to their dog that is roaming free.

quote:

This Louisiana law operates as a state leash requirement for dogs. It states that no person shall permit any dog in his or her possession to run at large on any unenclosed land, or trespass upon any enclosed or unenclosed lands of another.

If you dont want your dog dead because it went on someone else's property, then chain them up or fence them in.

What I'd really like to find out is whether it's legal to shoot a stray (call it feral if you want) dog, whether you're in the woods or in your backyard.

Simply giving a link to the trespassing statute doesn't exactly answer that.

I love this. It's all the owner's fault.

It is, did you read the statute? I didnt write it, all I do is follow it because I dont want my dog to be shot/killed/run over/stolen/poisoned.

This is clearly their fault and not yours. I hope you wear hunter orange when your are walking in the woods. Why dont yall post signs at the entrance that notify hunters that you may be working at unpredictable times and that often you bring your dogs. This should also be in the lease agreement.

There is no way I would shoot your dogs in this situation unless one was being agressive/threatening to me. However, there are still idiots out there that will shoot at movement in the woods. Be careful man.

No, because the thread was about pets. I cant find on LDWF where they define what wildlife is considered a nuisance. Maybe Green Jeans can chime in and let us know, or one of the wildlife agents can let us know that answer.

This thread did not start out about pets. The idea of pets kind of wandered its way into my thread unattended.

One has nothing to do with the other. I'll say it in clear language so there is no confusion. The fact that there is a leash law has absolutly zero to do with a hunter shooting a dog.

The leash law does NOT give public citizens the right or ability to kill dogs that are roaming at large. You CAN be sued for shooting someones dog, even if they aren't on a leash and wander onto someone else's property.

Good point. Because dogs never get loose.

Exactly. We have an underground fence for our two bassetts. One of them is just stubborn as can be and will just run right through it every now and then, even though it is turned all the way up. She's one of the friendliest dogs I've ever known, doesn't mean harm to anyone. If someone shot her unprovoked just because she went in their yard, that person would be leaving their home in an ambulance.

Just because law says you can shoot a stray dog in your yard doesn't mean you should, and you need to be prepared to deal with the consequences if you do.

The law DOES NOT say that.

As a kid I came across a dog that had been tangled in the chain that was connected to his dog house. I felt sorry for the dog so I went over to free him from the chain to enable him to move freely to water and food. When I got the dog free he seemed to be happy and quickly went over to drink water. After he got through drinking water he turned around with tail wagging and ran up to me like any normal dog. I bent over to pet him and he turned the tables. He bit me a total of thre times until I got my hands around his throat and choked the life out of him. Moral of the story? To date no dog that has bitten me has lived to tell the tale.

I'm not even for shooting dogs, but this story made me

I feel so sad. The OB used to be a place of nice people and commrodrie. What happened guys? Let bygones be bygones. Bury the hatchet.

On a serious note, ITS A frickING DOG. Stop watching "All dogs go to Heaven" and deal with it that it is an animal. If it bites me or tastes good it's gonna die. I choose to dispatch said animals at my conveinence

I'm telling EVERYBODY this. Not directing anything towards you. While the law says dogs should not be allowed to roam free, it doesn't say that John Q. Public can shoot a dog that isn't on a leash.

I knew this thread would be fun but I think it turned out better than I even thought it would.
