Maybe someone here knows more than me, but it looks like LDWF is taking advantage of the Catahoula ruling and extending Dewey Wills out to Little River between Saline Point and a point just past the diversion canal. They are going to regulate use just like any other WMA with no permanent blinds and no access before 4 a.m. Current blinds must be removed by 9/8.

pdf here.

quote:

Waterfowl blinds on the Little River Basin portion of Dewey W. Wills Wildlife Management Area (WMA) must be removed by Sept. 8, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced. A special use permit must be obtained prior to blind removal activities and will allow for the use of trucks, tractors, etc., if necessary.

For permits or questions, contact Cliff Dailey at 318-487-5885 or adailey@wlf.la.gov .

Dewey W. Wills WMA is located in portions of LaSalle, Catahoula, and Rapides parishes in central Louisiana approximately 20 miles northeast of Alexandria. For more information on the WMA, go to LINK .

This happened last year two days before duck season.

Yeah it is basically the same thing they are just not calling it dewey wills and restricting modified exhaust engines and four wheelers. They have put up some private property signs around outside of that portion but I doubt they last long. Not sure why Rapides appellate judges who already heard the case on appeal were allowed to sit ad hoc for the LaSC appeal and be a guaranteed "privatization" vote.

Any idea who the largest landowner out there will be after it’s all said and done?
If the landowners get greedy I can see the hunting going downhill quickly.

I bet that deal will be tied up in lawsuits for a long time by folks competing for or otherwise proving ownership.

I'd say Justiss Oil is now. There are two or three families with very very large tracts too and lots with large tracts on a smaller scale. These are butting up to what the map shows as the lake. My understanding is they are just drawing lines down to where Little River's north bank is and basically giving thousands of acres to those owners. Like in square type fashion. It is, or was, the largest freshwater lake in La so if you already owned 1k-7k acres butting up to it (or in parcels spread around it) then you get God knows how much more; I honestly have no idea.

It is my guess that Justiss would prefer things to have stayed as they were, as they have always had blinds on the lake and their farm and im sure they don't wanna deal with the liability of guides and what not. (plus everyone knows everyone around there and if you let one guy use it you'll have everyone bugging them to use it), but I can't truly speak for them that is just my guess. Some of the larger private landowners have already been getting approached by guiding services over the last few years, not sure how that will play out.

It likely will be, as of now word is that basically the lawyers are the ones who have gotten the lion share of the money since LA can't and isn't going to pay that ridiculous damages ruling and some of the class is fighting over that (unless that has been resolved). There are some new signs out there now that say "private land" but it's dry af at the moment and they are closer to the dewey wills new addition part on the southwest end. But those signs could easily be under water in winter.

TLDR: Mass chaos and noone knows for sure honestly, many locals are going to say screw it and keep going until they get forced to stop, lots of life long guys have given their blinds away to friends and sold their boats, others have had river blinds forever and they can't really do anything about that imo so long as it isn't attached to the goose reserve or the private side. Major shitshow and suspect ruling. It will probably turn into a bunch of Kitterlin Creek type spots with some owners and others will use it themselves with friends.

The litigation is moving toward the partition phase.

The State lost on the issue of being forced to pay at the Third Circuit. A writ has been granted by the Supremes, but I am not certain that it's on the mandamus issue-looks like it is. A large portion of the damages was overturned earlier, so I am not sure now about the total subject to the mandamus ruling.

I'll keep checking the record from time to time.

This shite pales in comparison to the "stole land" in plaquemines parish. Amazing a hundred years later many of those families haven't gotten their land back or the royalties they should have.

Here its one a buddy took east of the ditch. They drove out Im guessing at the ditch. Which isn't strange for summer we just havent had rain so its odd for this close to teal season. .No water on the rivers to get in easily but we've had rain, they'll flood it soon im sure.

As for thee plaquemines issue, with Catahoula the state didn't take land from anyone noone owned it. it was never owned, never surveyed. If anything give it to the Jena Band of Choctaw and let them run it since they were the first to use it.

The whole area would drop their cows off in the summer and pick them up around this time of year and people would hunt. Some of the blinds I hunt have been there 30 plus years before the diversion canal and other structures.

i grew up hunting with my dad and uncle (who are from there) on Little River just north of Catahoula Lake. My uncle died a few years ago and we spread his ashes at the old blind spot, i dont think he ever missed a day of duck hunting.

Any updates on this or how hunting season went this past year? Thinking about going up to the camp and taking the boat out and checking things out as I havent been there in 5 years or so. Would it be worth trying to set up a blind somewhere north of the lake on the river or is it a complete clusterfrick now?
