Anyone done this? I removed the 1,000 PTO but the 540 shaft won’t go in far enough to get locking ring back in. 1/4 inch more needed

Need to switch it out for a new mower I bought. I’ve tried any trick I can think of, the splines aren’t messed up at all. Owner manual and google yielded no help

Have you used the 540 shaft before? It might just be the picture angle but the 540 shaft looks longer.

It would be far easier to buy an adapter that slides onto your 1000 rpm shaft and has 540 splines that the implement PTO will hook to. I do have a JD 6115 that has a reversible PTO shaft that can be difficult to get back in place. I have to use a hammer sometimes to get it back in place.

Is the top spline in the 540 shaft thinner than the others (special alignment) As the other baw said, a-dapta kit - we used to use them for PTO driven spray pumps on larger tractors with fixed 1000 rpm PTO.

Adapter will still turn at 1000 speeds though, you don’t want 540 gearboxes turning that fast it will wear them out quickly because they have different gear ratios

It will be mowing 830 acres of catfish ponds so used almost daily. It needs to be correct, if it was just mowing a few acres every couple weeks I’d use the adapter

Sorry, the adapter I’m thinking of was downsizing from the big 1000 to small 1000 for the spray pumps.

Figure out why the 540 won’t fit.

I haven’t on this machine, my old mower was 1000 shaft. But the 540 shaft came with the tractor

540 is longer overall, but the part that goes inside the tractor is same length. The part that is longer is the part of the shaft that the implement pto goes on. On older tractors you had to adjust the drawbar if you swapped PTO from 1000 to 540 or vice versa, now they make the shaft’s different lengths to avoid having to do that

Don’t you have an 856? It has both shafts live.

I figured it out. There was a pin on the bigger spline inside the tractor, you had to turn it by hand to align the big spline with the smaller spline way inside the tractor for the 540 shaft to go all the way in

I like mowing with AC and a radio without a straight pipe turbo diesel belching black smoke in my face for hours
