What equipment is needed to tent camp safely and comfortably in 5-15 degree weather?

I have tent camped as low as 20. How much of a jump equipment wise is 5-15 degrees?

Sleeping bag rated far under what you’ll be in. Getting your bag elevated up off the ground is a huge one. Fill up a Nalgene with boiling water and put it in your bag when you go to bed. Good wool base layers.

Small inverter and an electric blanket

We've camped below zero in a tent with no top. No mr buddy. Just a arcturus heat reflective tarp. A heated blanket. And 3 or four blankets.

I’ve slept in weather around 20-25 in army surplus sleeping bags rated for temperatures lower than that and stayed warm. The problem was getting out of them, getting dressed and then staying warm.

I’m too old for all that crap now.

It depends a lot on how comfortable you are with discomfort.

You need a bag rated for the temp you'll be in at minimum, a really good sleeing pad, if weight isn't an issue a heavy wool blanket can help, and be willing to sleep in however much clothes it takes to stay warm.

Above zero with a good bag and a good pad you can sleep in good heavy wool long drawers and a good beanie and be comfortable. Getting out of the bag and keeping all your liquids liquid is a different story.

Backpacking or close to the truck?

Same here. January last year, a big front came through, it got down into the mid to low 20’s, stiff north wind and sleet. I slept on my cot to get off the ground, in my sleeping bag that’s rated for below 0, and I had a propane heater. Not a buddy heater, but I don’t know the name. It’s a good size standup heater with 3 panels.
I also set my tent on a tarp to keep moisture off the floor and then strung up another tarp over the tent facing north and south to block the wind.
It was warm enough in there that I slept in just my underwear and a beanie.
I think it would be comfortable in that 5-15 range, but you’d have to add at least a good base layer top and bottom and some good socks.
Once you get cold, it’ll be tough to warm back up.

When I slept like that, I was a kid sleeping in the back of a truck with no camper at a boat ramp. It was flipping cold. Wasn’t no way I was getting out of that 0° rated cocoon sleeping bag.

Now I sleep in an old over the top truck camper with a stove in it. When it gets cold I light a burner and sleep like a baby.

Eta: yeah I’m trashy, kill a bunch of deer though.

Sub zero bags. Make sure you dont wear lots of clothes. Just the skimmies. Your body heat in the bag is better than if you layer

This is bad advice. I've slept below zero over 10k feet a few times. You absolutely layer up inside the bag, stuff the foot of the bag with clothes, etc. You want that bastard chock full of as much stuff as possible. You need as much distance between your skin and the freezing air as you can get

If you're cold, you sleep full regalia.

The tent will do nothing. Good sleeping bag and a big blanket on top and you're good. Hope you don't have to wake up to pee before daylight.

The wide mouth Gatorade bottle is HIGHLY underrated for this.

I never get out/up to pee in cold weather.

Zero bag inside of a 30 bag. Buddy heater. Toboggan on your head. Canvas tent.

Between Scouts and some outdoor programs I participated in as an adult leader, I've done a little snow camping, but not a ton.

You don't want to be above the ground, just off of it. Being above the ground (like on a cot) allows cold air to circulate under you, and take makes you colder. You want to build air pockets that your body can heat up and maintain.

Was about to post the same. Put your tomorrow clothes in the foot of the bag and they will be warm when you go to put them on.
