It's not just for front end loaders, if you plow or pull something heavy like a hay bailer you want that weight to get traction. The water also gives the tractor a smoother ride not bouncing all over the place with just air. I've never seen a tractor without water in the tires.

Growing up with an 8n Ford we knew but never considered the no water option.

Actually water in the tires make them ride rougher in most conditions due to the fact that water wont compress like air will when you hit a hole or a bump. Water in the tires wont hurt anything as long as you dont move the tractor until the water thaws out. We have about 30 or so tires around the farm with water. Never had a problem as long as you dont move the tractor. For a tractor on a hunting operation you should probably consider calcium chloride or anti freeze due to the fact the colder it is you may need it to move a deer etc.We hang our deer to clean them with the loader.
